Arthouse Audit: 'I'm So Excited' Scores Decent Opening, 'Museum Hours' Is Surprise Success

Summer isn't the usual launchpad for subtitled films, but this weekend two June openers both show promise. "I'm So Excited" (Sony Pictures Classics), from the most consistently successful foreign language director Pedro Almodovar, opened solidly, if below his usual level. The much less-heralded "Museum Hours" (Cinema Guild) scored an above-average per screen average in two New York theaters. Both should gain attention across the country in upcoming weeks.

This weekend, the movie to see is Paul Feig's buddy cop comedy "The Heat" starring Sandra Bullock and Melissa McCarthy, but you may want to skip Roland Emmerich's latest blow-em-up spectacle "White House Down."

Almodovar Talks Raucous Airplane Comedy 'I'm So Excited': "Welcome to The Party!" (TRAILER)

"I'm So Excited" is a raunchy riot--fun, shocking and thoughtful. When Pedro Almodóvar walked into the interview room at the Crosby Street Hotel, the 63-year-old Spanish auteur launched straight into things, telling a group of film writers: "'I'm So Excited' has a double meaning in Spanish. It implies enthusiasm but also sexual arousal. So 'being excited' means 'being horny.' Welcome to the party!"

'I'm So Excited' Review: Sex, Drugs and R&B Collide at 30,000 Feet

It's hard to understand the motivation of whoever was tasked with translating the title of Pedro Almodóvar's new movie into English. They ended up with "I'm So Excited!", which certainly conveys the campy joy of the 95-minute airborne bacchanal but is a far cry from the film's original Spanish title, "Los amantes pasajeros." Admittedly, it's a hard one to translate--"The Lovers On-Board" or even "The Lover-Passengers" would be closer yet self-evidently clumsy--but the film's original title does so much to encapsulate the delicious, shocking, messy piece that Almodóvar has put together. Nevertheless, that unknown translator might have been on to something--this could be a tough film for American audiences to swallow (pun fully intended).

Also joining the lineup on June 18 is Disney/Pixar's "Monsters University" (in theaters June 21), the prequel to 2001's "Monsters, Inc."
