Myriad projects across a range of budgets and genres will be announced and shopped at Cannes. But while some are completed, others are in earlier stages of development and may never see the light of day; having the right talent attached will help get them sold in territories around the world and get the coin necessary for the green light.

IN THE WORKS: Endgame and FilmDistrict To Partner on Pastor Brothers Sci-Fi Thriller 'Selfless'

Producer/financeer Endgame Entertainment and indie distributor FilmDistrict have acquired the rights to “Selfless,” a sci-fi script by Spanish writer-directors Álex and David Pastor (“Carriers”).  Endgame Entertainment's James D. Stern and FilmDistrict’s Peter Schlessel will produce with Ram Bergman, who produced Rian Johnson’s “Looper” and “The Brothers Bloom" (Summit), both backed by Endgame ("An Education," "Every Little Step"), which will co-finance with the film's stateside distributor FilmDistrict.

Van Sant's 'Promised Land' Begins Production with Damon, Krasinski, DeWitt, MacDormand, Holbrook & McNairy

Gus Van Sant's "Promised Land," written by and starring Matt Damon and John Krasinski, begins production this week in Pennsylvania. Participant is co-producing with Focus Features, which holds worldwide rights; the film will be shopped at Cannes and is slated for release next winter.

Laika, the Oregon animation studio behind the Oscar-nominated "Coraline" and the upcoming feature "ParaNorman," plans to adapt the upcoming fantasy novel "Goblins." Novelist Philip Reeve's "Goblins" will be published in the UK on April 5, 2012 and in the US in the Fall of 2013.

'Little Miss Sunshine''s Carell & Collette Reteam for 'Descendants' Writers' Directorial Debut

Toni Collette and Steve Carell, who played sister and brother in indie fave "Little Miss Sunshine," will reteam for "The Way, Way Back" alongside Sam Rockwell, Allison Janney and Annasophia Robb. Actor-writers Jim Rash and Nat Faxon will make their directorial debut, following up on their Oscar win (with director Alexander Payne) for Best Adapted Screenplay for "The Descendants."

Guillaume Canet's "Blood Ties" now has financing courtesy of Worldview Entertainment, which will also produce. "Blood Ties" has now locked in stars Clive Owen, Billy Crudup, Marion Cotillard, Mila Kunis, Zoe Saldana, Matthias Schoenaerts, Noah Emmerich, Lili Taylor, Domenick Lombardozzi and James Caan; shooting begins in New York later this month.
