Walking into the second annual Academy Governors Awards reception, I was gobsmacked by who was milling in front of the photographers at the entrance. 12-year-old Elle Fanning posed with her Somewhere co-star Stephen Dorff and The Ghost Writer's Olivia Williams; George Lucas was chatting up Godfather stars Robert Duvall and James Caan, as Sofia, Francis Ford Coppola and his wife of 48 years, Eleanor, greeted Peter Fonda.

Oscar Watch: King's Speech, Firth, Bening Lead Gurus 'o Gold Poll

The Gurus 'O Gold will now be voting every week as the awards season picks up steam. The latest votes reflect where the Oscar race stands now, with consensus on the top six, led by The King's Speech, which played better for my Sneak Previews class than anything else has in five years of programming. We also voted on actor and actress.

Oscar Watch: Hans Zimmer Talks Inception Score

Christopher Nolan's Inception, which has crossed the $800-million mark worldwide, certainly will be one of this year's ten best picture Oscar nominees. Warner Bros. will bring the movie back into the public eye when it promos the DVD release in early December. One key contributor to the film's success is composer Hans Zimmer, who has been consistently strong of late (Sherlock Holmes marked his seventh Oscar nomination; he won for The Lion King). Released on iTunes July 9, the Inception soundtrack was a top ten bestseller.

There's still a long way to go in the Oscar race. Inception is Mad Men: Dom is Don

Pop Watch's Jeff Jensen argues that Mad Men's Don (Draper [Jon Hamm]) is in fact the same "heroic anti-hero" as Inception's Dom (Cobb [Leonardo DiCaprio]) - and not just because of the varying consonant. He insists that the TV show and film are very much the same thing, with only a few differences ("period setting" and "Lionel Richie-inspired dancing-on-the-ceiling special effects").
