Andy Samberg got it right. The SNL alum hosted Saturday night's Independent Spirit Awards, the penultimate show before Sunday's Oscars, and he led the evening with perfectly goofy candor. Everyone played along and the audience reaction shots were actually a pleasure to watch -- a contrast to Sunday night's Oscars.

Going in it was Fox Searchlight's scrappy "Beasts of the Southern Wild" vs. Weinstein Co's "Silver Linings Playbook" at the 28th Annual Film Independent Spirit Awards Saturday at the sunny beach in Santa Monica. The show, which airs at 10 PM on IFC, was hosted by SNL's Andy Samberg, who played well to the room; the highlights were several video spoofs of the nominees, including Samberg's Skype auditions. "We've got Matthew McConaughey," said Samberg. "Hollywood fuck you!"

Just a year ago, long-time Film Independent staffers Sean McManus and Josh Welsh took on new roles as co-presidents of Film Independent, which runs many vital programs for the West Coast independent film community, as well as the Independent Spirit Awards and the Los Angeles Film Festival. They replaced Dawn Hudson, who left FIND to become the CEO of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. I talked to the two men on the phone about where they are and where they're going--and the upcoming Indie Spirits, my favorite awards event.

Spirit Awards Pitch a Tent in Santa Monica for 28th Awards Show February 23

It's back to the white tent on the Santa Monica beach the day before the Oscars, February 23, for the indie alternative awards show--a favorite for many each year--Film Independent's Spirit Awards. The 28th Indie Spirits will be exclusively broadcast the same night on IFC after its live taping. The nominees will be announced November 27; and Film Independent members are eligible to vote.

As expected, "The Artist" dominated Saturday's Independent Spirit Awards, winning four awards for best feature, director, actor and cinematography. The drama was getting "The Artist" creative team via police escort to the event from a delayed flight from Paris, where the film won six Cesars.
