Trailer Watch: Meryl Streep and Julia Roberts Go Toe-to-Toe in Weinstein Entry 'August: Osage County'

Check out the first trailer for "August: Osage County," starring heavyhitters Meryl Streep and Julia Roberts in John Wells' adaptation of Tracy Letts' Pulitzer Prize-winning play. The Weinstein film hits theaters on November 8 and, needless to say, is a likely Oscar contender. (Harvey Weinstein is expected to introduce some material on the film at a press preview in Cannes.)

Weinstein Lines Up Oscar Slate, First Reactions to 'August: Osage County,' Starring Streep

First reactions are coming in for the Weinsteins' "August: Osage County," an adaptation of Tracy Letts' Pulitzer Prize-winning play with director John Wells at the helm. TWC production exec Ben Famiglietti told Harvey Weinstein that the 190-page play was "the best writing ever out of Chicago," Weinstein recalled at a Sundance panel. "It was amazing, we invested in the play, which means getting movie rights. It stars Meryl Streep and Julia Roberts, is produced by George Clooney and Grant Heslov."

Now and Then: Hitchcock's First Classic, and an Underrated Modern Descendant

Alfred Hitchcock had been working as a director for more than a decade when he made "The 39 Steps" (1935), a film that's half trench coats, street lamps, and foreign agents. The other half is English wit, a marriage plot, and a MacGuffin: the first proof, long before his later masterworks, that he was a maestro of the unbalancing act.

As expected, Lionsgates’ “The Hunger Games” held onto the top spot at the box office in spectacular fashion this weekend as the blockbuster film grossed an estimated $61.1 million, down a relatively modest 60% considering its record opening. Snow White and the Huntsman Gets New Imagery, Loses Its Edge

It was bound to happen. Two Snow White projects have been defining themselves as special and unique--until commercial reality hits. Relativity's project finallly has a title - Mirror Mirror - and places stars Julia Roberts, Lily Collins and Armie Hammer in a comedy/adventure kid-friendly version of the classic tale (here are pictures). Universal's Snow White and the Huntsman has been declaring itself a more badass rendition, with an edgy Kristen Stewart wearing armor, battling against Charlize Theron, and Chris Hemsworth there to flex his muscles. With this new imagery, it looks like the facade is beginning to fall leaving Huntsman looking like it's only a teen-friendly step above Mirror.

Weekend Preview: Almodovar's The Skin I Live In is Best Bet of Disappointing Openings

Weekend Preview: Almodovar's The Skin I Live In is Best Bet of Disappointing Openings
While it may not be his greatest film, The Skin I Live In is still essential viewing for any Pedro Almodovar fan. Just gazing at stars Antonio Banderas, Elena Anaya and the gorgeous sets within this beyond-twisted melodrama is worth the ticket price. Given the star power spread across the other films on offer, you'd think there was much to look forward to, but critics are grasping at straws trying to say positive things about the likes of Fireflies in The Garden (Julia Roberts, Ryan Reynolds, Willem Dafoe), Trespass (Nicole Kidman, Nicholas Cage), Universal's remake of The Thing (Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Eric Christian Olsen, Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje, Joel Edgerton) and The Big Year (Jack Black, Steve Martin, Owen Wilson). Ami Canaan Mann's (Michael Mann's daughter) gritty debut Texas Killing Fields, inspired by actual events, is boosted by a strong cast (Sam Worthington, Jessica Chastain, Chloe Moretz). But it's a wasted opportunity; promising moments are weakened by an uninspired script and clumsy construction. Believe it or not, the Footloose remake is making critics tap their feet.

Brothers Grimm: Snow White Stills Diminish Hope in Relativity's Family Flick

The more we learn about Relativity's The Brothers Grimm: Snow White, the less excited we become. This "family friendly" take on Snow White (with Julia Roberts, Lily Collins, Armie Hammer), versus Universal's edgier (or so they want us to think). The Brothers Grimm: Snow White, is directed by Tarsem Singh, and will be first out of the gate on March 16, 2012. Rupert Sanders' Snow White and the Huntsman (with Charlize Theron, Kristen Stewart, Chris Hemsworth) is in theaters July 1.
