Friday Box Office: 'Ride Along' Reigns Again, 'Awkward Moment' Connects, 'Labor Day' Lags

For theaters, Super Bowl Weekend is sometimes an early Valentine's Day, as the week's new releases tend to have a rom-com theme. This year is no different, with both new wide releases -- "That Awkward Moment" (Focus) and "Labor Day" (Paramount) -- meant as counter-programming against the football hoopla.

Jason Reitman's 'Labor Day' Is a Suspenseful Romantic Heart-Tugger (TRAILER)

Jason Reitman saw a movie in Joyce Maynard's 2010 novel "Labor Day." And what a movie it is. Fair to say it works as a tearjerker. Reitman pulls off a deceptively straightforward romance that seems old-fashioned given the current studio antipathy toward dramas.

Telluride Review: 'Salinger' Documentary and Joyce Maynard Reaction (TRAILER)

The doc, which took Salerno ten years, is a thorough portrait of the enigmatic, reclusive author of "The Catcher in the Rye," taking us through his prep school days and early short-story writing--his goal to be published in The New Yorker had to wait until after World War II. He landed in France on D-Day and served 299 days in active combat before V-Day, writing "Catcher in the Rye" by the side of the road when he could. After witnessing the horrors of the holocaust at a concentration camp and doing espionage work in post-war Germany hunting down Nazis, he brought home a Nazi war bride to his Jewish father, but the marriage was annulled after a month.
