'Arbitrage' Marks New Trend of Releasing Pay-Per-View Earnings

Richard Gere's Bernie Madoff-esque thriller "Arbitrage" reportedly now holds the record for combined sales for a movie released concurrently in theaters and VOD, grossing more than $7.3 million on the big screen and about $11 million on small screens. It also marks a slowly increasing trend of companies (in this case Roadside Attractions and Lions Gate Entertainment) starting to reveal heretofore hidden pay-per-view sales figures, as VOD becomes more relevant to independent film profit and distribution.

Lionsgate and Summit Move Back Release of 'Ender's Game' as Merger Shakes Out, with Changes on International Side

To most observers January's Lionsgate Summit merger couldn't have worked out better; Summit sold at the top of their game with one last "Twilight" still to come, and the merger went through before the launch of expected franchise "Hunger Games," which did not disappoint. But integrating two organizations is not easy.

Why 'Hunger Games' Boasts Such Wide Appeal

“The Hunger Games” did not devour the boxoffice quite as thoroughly this weekend. At the 10:30 screening at the AMC in Century City Saturday morning, I had my choice of half the seats in every row. But the bodies that filled the other half of the seats should make Lionsgate extremely happy.
