Toy Story 3 Tops Quentin Tarantino's Best of 2010

Quentin Tarantino has posted his favorite movies of 2010, all twenty of them. Unlike many critics, Tarantino has no problem with citing movies that are popular hits. And he's seen his share of obscurities as well. Tarantino is an Academy member, though not a typical one. His taste is catholic, ranging from specialty and foreign films to raunchy comedies, animated family fare and big-budget actioners. His most surprising choices are two critical and box office studio failures that are as well-directed as they were commercially misguided: James Mangold's Knight and Day and Ridley Scott's Robin Hood. Wow.

Flickchart Top 20 of 2010 Led by Inception, Scott Pilgrim

Flickchart is a film buff's addictive time-waster that's a best-to-avoid for me. Sure enough, I'm lured to check out the site's Top 20 of 2010 chart, compiled from some 49 million rankings from Flickchart users all over the world. Surprise: Inception is number one, followed by Scott Pilgrim vs. the World. (They also have a best animated films of 2010 chart, which does not include The Illusionist in its top ten. Humph.)

E Film Critics' Top Ten Quote Whores

E Film Critic's Erik Childress continues to wage war against critics who he deems "whores." They consistently deliver the film quotes that the studios love to include in their ads. Finally, I don't know who most of these people are.

The Social Network Tops Village Voice/LA Weekly Critics Poll

Lo and behold, The Social Network tops yet another critics list--the Village Voice/LA Weekly Year-End Poll--by a good margin, followed by Carlos, Winter's Bone and The Ghost Writer. Olivier Assayas won best director for Carlos, followed by The Social Network's David Fincher, Darren Aronofsky (Black Swan) and Roman Polanski (The Ghost Writer). The Social Network's Aaron Sorkin won for best screenplay, followed by Maren Ade (Everyone Else), Robert Harris and Roman Polanski (The Ghost Writer) and Todd Solondz (Life During Wartime).

Film Comment Year-End Best List

One good thing about year-end best lists from such places as Film Comment--posted below-- is that you can be reminded of the arcane fest films you missed, no matter if you've probably seen more movies than most. Already on my screener pile (thanks Fredell) is Claire Denis's White Material, which came in third on this list. Many of my ten bests rank high here, including Carlos, The Social Network, The Ghost Writer, Winter's Bone, Inside Job and Toy Story 3. (I put A Prophet on my list last year.) And I put True Grit, The King's Speech, and Fish Tank on my ten-best as well.

2010 Ten Best List

2010 Ten Best List
I've been feverishly catching up on screeners, knowing that I had to declare my ten best list on Friday's Oscar Talk. I filed my votes at the Village Voice and indieWIRE critics polls. And I filed my nominations for the Broadcast Film Critics Association, which announced Monday. It turns out that my number ten choice, Fish Tank, had a qualifying run in 2009. So I replaced it with The Ghost Writer. So here goes:
