This Weekend, Don't Miss 'Lone Survivor' in NY and LA, Avoid 'Interior. Leather Bar'

Amid awards season expansions, relatively light offerings hit major theaters and art houses this weekend, among them "Paranormal Activity: The Marked Ones," yakuza thriller "Beyond Outrage," "Interior. Leather Bar" and "The Best Offer." But above all, head to select theaters for "Lone Survivor," held over until the film goes wide.

Arthouse Audit: 'Lone Survivor' Opens Well in Two Theaters While 'August: Osage County' Falls Short

The long holiday weekend is one of the best periods of the year for specialized films. But given the plethora of high profile art films and quality wide studio releases to catch up with, business is spread out among many titles. This weekend, "Lone Survivor" exceeded expectations in limited release, while "August: Osage County" fell flat.

Holiday Box Office Top Ten: 'Frozen' and 'Hobbit' Beat Out Newer Films, 'August: Osage County' Opens Flat

The post-Christmas weekend can be one of the biggest of the year. And so it was. The top 10 grossed $171 million, up a healthy $17 million from 2012, which nudges the year's totals slightly ahead of 2012. However the strong weekend total comes despite an uneven performance from a wide variety of films. The top three slots went to "The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug" (at #1 on its third weekend), repeating "The Hobbit"'s three-weekend hold on the top spot, Thanksgiving holdover "Frozen," and "Anchorman 2" in its second weekend.

NYT Best Sellers Dominated by Films and TV: '12 Years a Slave,' 'Long Walk to Freedom,' 'Orange Is the New Black' and More

One of the revelations from the current New York Times list of non-fiction bestsellers is how many films land there. Solomon Northup's "12 Years a Slave," which was overshadowed upon its 1853 publication by abolitionist Harriet Beecher Stowe's "Uncle Tom's Cabin" and "A Key to Uncle Tom's Cabin" and long only known by historians, now sits at number three on the bestseller list. Impressive, and cool.

Peter Berg directed "Battleship" for Universal Pictures so that he could direct the movie he cared about, "Lone Survivor," which he has been working on for five years. Universal is giving "Lone Survivor" an Oscar qualifying run on December 27 in advance of a January 14 wide release. Like "Argo" and "Zero Dark Thirty," it is based on a true story.
