Review Roundup: M. Night Shyamalan Makes a "Non-Happening" with 'After Earth,' Starring a Sparkless Jaden and Will Smith

Critics aren't impressed with either M. Night Shyamalan's directorial work or the Jaden and Will Smith pairing in new apocalyptic sci-fi entry "After Earth" (June 7). The venom towards Shyamalan is strong (Sony all but cut his name from the film's marketing), with Variety calling his film a "non-happening," and the Hollywood Reporter pointing out that the director does little to help 14-year-old Jaden Smith, obviously flailing in a role meant to carry the film. Whither M. Night Shyamalan's Name in New 'After Earth' Trailer?

One notable thing about the new trailer for "After Earth" (June 7), starring look-alike father-son duo Jaden and Will Smith, is the absence of director M. Night Shyamalan's name. Following the disastrously reviewed, 3-D retrofitted "The Last Airbender," not to mention "The Lady in the Water" and "The Happening," Sony is choosing not to remind audiences of Shyamalan's involvement in the movie. Does this mean that Shyamalan is an actual negative as a selling tool? On some level, Sony might as well make "After Earth" an Alan Smithee film.
