New York Film Festival Picks Up Steam, Loses Outside Voices

Checking out the schedule for the 51st New York Film Festival, I'm struck by how many movies there are still to see, even if many have played other festivals, from Cannes last May to fall fests Telluride, Venice and Toronto. Under the Film Society of Lincoln Center executive director Rose Kuo, over the past three years the NYFF has not only undergone management changes, but has picked up steam and momentum as a major festival.

A lucky group will get to see the one-time-only Town Hall concert in New York on September 29, mounted by the Coen brothers' music supervisor T Bone Burnett, called "Another Day, Another Time: Celebrating the Music of 'Inside Llewyn Davis.'" Luckily for the rest of us who can't be there, Showtime has just acquired exclusive television rights to film and air the benefit concert.

Errol Morris's Rumsfeld Doc Is Popular on the Fall Festival Circuit, But May Not Play the New York Film Festival

Already one of the fall’s more eagerly anticipated films, “The Unknown Known” – Errol Morris’s take on the beloved Donald Rumsfeld, the very idea of which makes our toes curl -- seems poised to be the biggest doc of the season. Word is that the film has not only been invited to the Telluride and Toronto International Film Festivals but it's become the first of two docs ever accepted into competition at the Venice Biennale (the other being the homegrown “Sacro Gra” by Gianfranco Rosi).

Ben Stiller's 'The Secret Life of Walter Mitty' Joins Oscar Race as NYFF Centerpiece Gala (TRAILER)

As soon as I saw the impressive footage from "The Secret Life of Walter Mitty" at CinemaCon, I knew Ben Stiller's ambitious cinematic retelling of the classic James Thurber short story was a potential Oscar Contender. And the New York Film Festival likes it enough to accord it the prestige Centerpiece Gala for a World Premiere on Saturday, October 5 at the 51st NYFF (September 27 – October 13). Opening night is "Captain Phillips." Closing night will be a high-profile fall title that that has not been announced for Venice or Toronto, such as Cannes hit "All is Lost," which I hear could earn Robert Redford an Oscar nomination for his virtually silent performance. Will David O. Russell's "American Hustle" be finished in time? "Foxcatcher"? "The Wolf of Wall Street"?
