Bruno Ganz To Be Honored by European Film Academy

Younger folks probably know Bruno Ganz best from those endless YouTube Hitler parodies taken from Oliver Hirschbiegel's Downfall (2004); but he is one of the world's great actors and thus I am delighted to report that the European Film Academy will honor the legendary Swiss actor at their European Film Awards.

Ebert Relaunches At the Movies on PBS with Lemire, Mitchell

Roger Ebert announced his relaunch of At the Movies, a month after the demise of his former show on Disney/ABC, in his blog, naturally, and on Twitter. Critics Christy Lemire (AP) and Elvis Mitchell (KCRW-FM), who were guest hosts on At the Movies with Richard Roeper after Ebert fell ill from cancer, will be the show's principal co-hosts. Bloggers Kim Morgan and Omar Moore will also contribute to the program, writes Ebert on his site:

New Fox Initiative Recycles 35mm Films into Clothes

In a new green initiative, Twentieth Century Fox’s Latin American division will collaborate with Asia’s Grumex World Enterprises to recycle 35mm films and trailers into synthetic fibers that will be used to manufacture clothes, packaging and other products. Having successfully used the operation in Mexico for two years, Fox extended it to Latin America in June 2010 (Brazil, still in the planning phase, will be last to adopt the practice). After Grumex collects the film material in each country, they will shred it and ship it to Hong Kong where specialized machinery treats and transforms it into polyester. Their goal is to recycle over 20,000 films and 35,000 trailers per year.

This news story about Mel Gibson crashing his Maserati into a Malibu cliffside Sunday night makes sure to say that alcohol wasn't involved. Gibson was unhurt. The car was smashed. I'm sorry, but driving alone into a hillside is not a good sign.
