New Film Fest Spot Opens as Olivier Pere Leaves Locarno for Arte France Cinema

The game of musical chairs on the global film festival circuit continues as Olivier Père leaves his role as artistic director at the Festival del film Locarno after three years. He's moving on to become the General Director of Arte France Cinema. This means he is no longer a candidate for the New York Film Festival, which at the end of 2012 loses director Richard Pena after 25 years. The Film Society of Lincoln Center is searching for his replacement.

NYFF Picks 32 New Titles for Main Slate: 'Amour,' 'Hyde Park on Hudson,' 'Frances Ha,' Passion,' 'No,' 'Holy Motors' Make Cut

The New York Film Festival always leans heavily on the Cannes Fest, and sure enough of the 32 titles they've selected for the main slate of the 50th fest (September 28-October 14), many are from Cannes, including Michael Haneke's "Amour," which won the Palme d'Or. The opening night film by Ang Lee, "Life of Pi," has already been announced, along with closing nighter "Flight," from Bob Zemeckis, and centerpiece gala "Not Fade Away," from rookie director David Chase. Haneke, like many of the directors invited to NY, is a returning filmmaker, having shown "The White Ribbon" in 2009.

Ang Lee's 3-D 'Life of Pi' Will Open NYFF

Ang Lee's "The Life of Pi" (November 21) will open the upcoming 50th New York Film Festival (September 28 – October 14), the first 3-D film to do so. (Martin Scorsese's "Hugo" played as a 3-D work-in-progress last year.) The NYFF has already announced its closing night film, Paramount's "Flight," directed by Robert Zemeckis and starring Denzel Washington, another mainstream booking for the high-minded Fest.

Growing up in the New York film community, I knew Vito Russo, and read his influential 1981 landmark book about gay images in the media, The Celluloid Closet: Homosexuality in Movies, which was revised in 1987 and has never fallen out of print. Russo travelled the world with his "Celluloid Closet" presentations.
