'Great Gatsby' Surprises to Open Just Behind 'Iron Man 3'

In one of the biggest box office surprises in recent months, Baz Luhrmann's "The Great Gatsby" exceeded pre-opening estimates and overcame mixed reviews to gross over $19.4 million on Friday (including Thursday night late shows), nearly equaling the more than $19.7 million that "Iron Man 3" took in for the day.

'Iron Man 3' Crushes Weekend Competition, But Can't Save Box Office: 'Pain & Gain' Plummets

Disney and Marvel are chortling with glee at the massive global success of "The Iron Man 3," finally adding late arrival North America to its huge foreign openings. The domestic numbers rank a bit below what "The Avengers" did one year ago, but overtaking that number was a tall order. Even so, $175 million for the weekend is at the high end of expectations, with the best news coming from Saturday's modest drop from the initial number.

'Iron Man 3' Outpaces 'Avengers' Worldwide Grosses and U.S. Top 10 Totals

The big news this weekend: Disney/Marvel's "Iron Man 3" opened in most of the world between Wednesday and Friday; its $195 million gross in 42 territories is running ahead of even last year's "number one global blockbuster "The Avengers," which initially grossed $185 million in similar dates.

More 'Pain' Than 'Gain' in Friday Box Office

The expected May blockbusters can't come quickly enough. Yesterday's top 10 grosses, including two underperforming new releases with prominent stars, had the smallest total since early February. At $23 million, this marked not only a sharp drop from last week's $29 million, but last year's $28 million, as the slump of 2013 continues.

Weekend Preview: Michael Bay's Latest a 'Pain'-Filled Experience; Jeff Nichols' 'Mud' Captivates Critics; Skip 'The Big Wedding'

Fans of Michael Bay and his cast of beefy cohorts will likely flock to dumb male comedy "Pain & Gain," a soulless, "low-budget" exercise in machismo that has appalled critics. Those looking for lighter fare might seek solace in "The Big Wedding," which has earned universal pans despite its top-drawer cast. They are better off RSVPing to another event, such as "Take Shelter" director Jeff Nichols' southern drama "Mud," which premiered at Cannes, starring Matthew McConaughey, or the Oscar-nominated maritime doc "Kon Tiki," which traces a Norwegian's journey in 1947 across the Pacific Ocean in a balsa wood raft.

Review Roundup: Michael Bay's 'Pain & Gain' Is a Soulless Macho Farce

I had the misfortune of seeing Michael Bay's "Pain & Gain" at CinemaCon, which Paramount mystifyingly screened to the nation's exhibitors, who tend to be a conservative family-oriented bunch who are always begging the studios to release less R-rated fare. Don't get me wrong.
