Arthouse Audit: Two Comedies Score as 'Chef' Beats Out 'Fading Gigolo,' 'Palo Alto' Shows Promise

Jon Favreau's "Chef" (Open Road) and Gia Coppola's "Palo Alto" (Tribeca) both scored more than $20,000 per screen in limited openings this weekend. Radius/Weinstein veered from its usual pattern with a wider initial release of the food documentary "Fed Up," eschewing VOD for now.

Friday Box Office: 'Neighbors' Soars, 'Spider-Man' Gets Caught in Its Web with Big Fall

Universal's "Neighbors," starring Seth Rogen and Zac Efron, proved once again how hungry audiences are for laughs at the movies with a $19.6 million Friday night gross (including $2.5 million from the previous night). This is the best one-day figure for a live-action comedy since "Ted" (also Universal) in June 2012, which grossed just over $20 million, for a 3-day total of $54 million.

Five Films to See, or Not-to-See, This Weekend, from 'Neighbors' to 'The Double'

This movie weekend offers unexpected pleasures -- as well as a few clunkers -- for all cinematic tastes, including the very R-rated "Neighbors," modestly scaled indies "Palo Alto," "The Double" and "Chef," and a potently disturbing food doc, "Fed Up."

On the first day of shooting Gia Coppola was feeling her nerves. "I was so eager to do it," she says. Telluride Update: Buyers Lining Up for Divisive 'Under the Skin,' Strong Debut 'Palo Alto' and Provocative 'Starred Up' (TRAILER)

Reviews and acquisitions are heating up at the 40th annual Telluride Film Festival, which kicked off yesterday. Three notable acquisitions titles debuted Thursday night of which I saw one, "Palo Alto," the impressive debut of young filmmaker Gia Coppola (Francis Ford's granddaughter, born six months after her father Gio's accidental death) which will also play Venice and Toronto.
