Anatomy of a Scene: Oscar-Nominated Editor Christopher Rouse Talks the Pivotal Attack in 'Captain Phillips'

Best Picture nominee "Captain Phillips" is the ultimate in Paul Greengrass-style verite, given its life and death intensity and emotional epiphanies. More than just a fact-based heist gone bad, it raises deep concerns about our globalized world in conflict. Oscar nominee Christopher Rouse, who's already won an Academy Award for editing "The Bourne Ultimatum," discusses the pivotal attack on the Alabama, which was dangerous to shoot as well as challenging to cut.

EXCLUSIVE: Tom Hanks and Paul Greengrass Talk Powerful Final Scene from 'Captain Phillips' (VIDEO)

Tom Hanks has never been as emotionally naked as in the final five minutes of "Captain Phillips." Truth, Fiction, and Somali Pirates: 'Captain Phillips' vs. 'Stolen Seas'

One is a riveting Hollywood adventure, the other a searching and nuanced documentary, but "Captain Phillips" and "Stolen Seas" -- which, taken together, comprise the year's most engaging double bill -- traverse similar narrative and thematic terrain. Both ask, in every sense one might mean the phrase, where the truth lies.

Dana Brunetti, Michael De Luca Talk Controversial 'Captain Phillips,' Rating, 'Fifty Shades of Grey' UPDATED

One sign of success in Hollywood is controversy. Well-reviewed Somali pirate saga "Captain Phillips" is hanging in at the box office against the fall onslaught because it combines a powerful true story with consummate moviemaking from director Paul Greengrass, who not only efficiently builds tension but shows us not only the POV of the heroic kidnapped Captain Richard Phillips and his crew but their Somali pirate torturers.

Given that Captain Richard Phillips turned up at the L.A. premiere on Skype and wrote the memoir on which this adventure is based, it is not news that he survived. But Tom Hanks' extraordinary acting in the last few scenes, from when he's bound and trapped at gunpoint in a bobbing claustrophobic lifeboat to the finale, will earn the two-time Oscar-winner his sixth nomination.
