Immersed in Movies: Revisiting 'Brave' with Director Mark Andrews

Pixar isn't used to playing the dark horse, but that's where the animation powerhouse currently finds itself in this year's Oscar race with "Brave." But last night the Scottish mother/daughter adventure/comedy won the Golden Globe and seized some momentum over its two Disney rivals, "Frankenweenie" and "Wreck-It Ralph."

Immersed in Movies: Handicapping the Animation Oscar Race

With the fall/holiday season just around the corner, the Oscar animation race is even more wide open than last season, when "Rango" jumped out early and never looked back in grabbing the Academy Award. In fact, most of the eventual nominees have probably not been released, which makes it hard to pin down how great a year it will turn out to be.

I went up to Pixar last week to see "Finding Nemo 3D" (which platforms theatrically September 14 at the El Capitan and elsewhere before surfacing Dec. 4 on Blu-ray & Blu-ray 3D from Disney Home Entertainment). Disney Screens 'Finding Nemo' in 3-D for Olympic Swim Team; Hits Theaters September 14, Followed by Blu-Ray

"While the blogosphere rips apart Pixar for selling out for earmarking a "Finding Nemo" sequel for humbled writer-director Andrew Stanton's return to filmmaking--which is absurd, as Pixar can be counted on to produce better sequels than most, i.e. "Toy Story" 2 and 3--I will be sitting in a theater on September 14 to see the 3-D version of "Nemo."

Despite the disaster that was "John Carter," writer-director Andrew Stanton may take the reins on the sequel to his hugely successful "Finding Nemo," according to Deadline. Stanton has been integral to the success of Disney/Pixar, from writing "Toy Story," among other things, to directing Oscar-winning "Finding Nemo" (2003) and "Wall-E" (2008).

Trailer Watch: Mike and Sulley Party it Up in New Teaser for Pixar's 'Monsters University'

Before the monsters were "Monsters, Inc.," they were just a bunch of dorm-partying, disco ball-lovin', lampshade-wearing college co-eds. University seems to have been a relatively wholesome time for the monsters -- slow-dancing and no explicit booze -- unless that Gleww squeezing is a sexual innuendo. Watch the new teaser trailer below.
