'Bad Grandpa' Pulls Young Males, 'Counselor' Flops, '12 Years' Makes Top Ten, NC-17 'Blue' Starts Strong

Who knew? All it took to bring back the core males MIA from theaters was a film about an 86-year-old. Paramount's "Jackass Presents: Bad Grandpa" opened to an easy #1 Friday with $12.6 million (including Thursday late shows). Maybe Emmanuelle Riva should have stuck around a little longer after the Oscars last year.

Critics Show No Mercy for Ridley Scott's 'The Counselor': "It's just bad Cormac McCarthy" (REVIEW AND ROUNDUP)

A-list director Ridley Scott can round up his pick of top Hollywood talent, and did so with elegantly violent border thriller "The Counselor," which opens Friday. Unfortunately, the first screenplay written by novelist Cormac McCarthy tries to spice up a torrid fish-out-of-water crime thriller with the kind of cryptic existential literary language (read: pretentious) that is better read than spoken.

UPDATE: Aaron Paul of "Breaking Bad," along with Sigourney Weaver and John Turturro, have joined the cast of Ridley Scott's biblical epic "Exodus." The film already has Christian Bale on board, playing Moses, and Joel Edgerton as Egyptian ruler Ramses.

A terrific international trailer for Ridley Scott's "The Counselor," starring Michael Fassbender, Penelope Cruz, Javier Bardem, Brad Pitt and Cameron Diaz, has landed. In this new spot for the neo-noir thriller, which was written by Pulitzer Prize winner Cormac McCarthy ("No Country for Old Men," "The Road"), we get more of a glimpse into the kinetic plot.

The first international trailer for Ridley Scott's "The Counsellor" has landed. The film is the first original feature screenplay penned by Pulitzer Prize-winning author Cormac McCarthy ("The Road," "No Country for Old Men") and stars Michael Fassbender, Brad Pitt, Penelope Cruz, Javier Bardem and Cameron Diaz, among others, in a story centered on a lawyer dabbling in drug trade and then suddenly in over his head.

Ridley Scott's 'Crimes of the Century' Docu-Series Comes to CNN

Taking a tip from Nat Geo, CNN has added Ridley Scott to its summer schedule. The writer-director's tantalizing new series "Crimes of the Century," set to premiere on June 23, will focus each week during its eight-episode run on a shocking historical event with far-reaching repercussions. Subjects include the assassination of John Lennon, the Amanda Knox murder trial and the Oklahoma City bombing.

Sony Chief Pascal Is Gung Ho on Strong Women, from Salander to Cleopatra

Sony Pictures co-chairman Amy Pascal is gung-ho on "Zero Dark Thirty." At the film's Hollywood premiere Monday night, the studio chief, who acquired the film from financeer-producer Megan Ellison's Annapurna Pictures, was proud of the film's tough CIA agent heroine, played by SAG nominee Jessica Chastain, who could score big during awards season. The studio is giving the movie a big awards push in advance of its limited holiday and wide January release.

IN THE WORKS: Scott and Zaillian Team Up for Train Strike Disaster Film (VIDEO)

Ridley Scott and Steve Zaillian, who previously collaborated on "American Gangster," are set to produce a project for Fox inspired by (not remaking) the BBC's 2003 docudrama "The Day Britain Stopped," which turned on the fictional disaster of a London train strike.

Immersed in Movies: Dissecting 'Prometheus' with Scripter Damon Lindelof and VFXers

While it's not surprising that critics and journos are deeply divided over "Prometheus," it helps to have low expectations. In my case, I came away with more than I expected. I found Ridley Scott's return to sci-fi enthralling. He seems to have transcended the "Alien" universe by combining it with "Blade Runner."
