Things I Learned at the San Francisco Film Festival Awards, from Lasseter to Linklater

The Awards night at the 15-day San Francisco International Film Festival, the nation's oldest, in its 57th year, usually arrives about halfway through the marathon of screenings, Q & As, tributes and panels. On Thursday, San Francisco Film Society Awards went to Pixar chief John Lasseter, rewarded after decades of Bay Area stardom; Austin writer-director Richard Linklater ("Before Midnight"), who then screened his Sundance hit "Boyhood" to a standing ovation at the packed Castro Theatre on Friday night; screenwriter Steve Gaghan ("Syriana") and veteran actor Jeremy Irons.

Alice Waters Throws Chez Panisse Feast for Sauper's SFIFF Film 'We Come as Friends'

The phone rings with an invite to a special dinner at Chez Panisse tonight. I'm on deadline, at home, hoping to finish a piece before I drive over to the first full day of the 57th Annual San Francisco Film Festival. I'm determined to make it in by the 3 p.m. screening of "We Come as Friends," by Hubert Sauper. Chef Alice Waters, it seems, met Sauper at the Berlin Film Festival in February, loved "We Come as Friends," and is hosting a dinner in his honor. "Yes, of course, thank you so much, I'll see you there."

The San Francisco International Film Festival Opens with 'Two Faces of January'

"The Two Faces of January" was a perfect opening night film. I love Patricia Highsmith and her malevolent worldview. Even if this wasn't Highsmith at her most iconic, the twisted and shifting allegiances among the sexy movie-star trio of Viggo Mortenson, Kirsten Dunst, and Oscar Isaacs, set against the seductive and glamourous locales of Greece and Turkey, kept me engaged and occasionally enthralled.
