Ted Hope Talks Exit from San Francisco Film Society, Schamus, and Indie Film's Future

Ted Hope is more fast-moving whip-smart entrepreneur than arts administrator. He believed that he could move the needle farther at the well-funded 57-year-old organization than he could. The SFFS was seeking to find a replacement for Bingham Ray, who had died shortly after taking the executive director job, and liked what they were hearing from Hope, a veteran indie film producer with a zeal for moving the independent film community toward new digital models.

SFIFF programmer Sean Uyehara, who's been hanging out with Michael Polish in the bar upstairs, dares to ask, "what was it like to fall in love on the set?" Polish replies, "It took me ten films to fall in love on the set!," whereupon Kate Bosworth says "I wish I had gone to the bar!" LISTEN: Steven Soderbergh on 'What's Killing Cinema,' A Fungible Algorithm (PODCAST)

No State of Cinema address at the SFIFF has been as hotly anticipated as this year's by Steven Soderbergh. (Listen to our podcast recording below.) This is not only because he's a prolific and beloved auteur that has worked in every genre and budget, but because he recently announced his retirement from filmmaking, in order to spend more time painting, making collages, writing books, directing a new play by Scott Burns about Columbine, as well as a stage version of "Cleopatra," and exploring other avenues of creativity.

San Francisco International Film Festival Complete Lineup Includes Julie Delpy with 'Before Midnight,' 'Invasion of the Body Snatchers,' A2E Lab

The arrival of the annual San Francisco International Film Festival (April 25 -- May 9, 2013) is like finding water in the desert -- and this in a supposedly sophisticated film-going city. At this year's press conference, the usual phrase "we're showing over 200 films from xyz countries" lacked the second quantifying number, but a quick count of the Country Index in the program book yields 50. (By far the largest number -- 68 -- come from the United States, but the lineup is international indeed.)
