Critics Choice Movie Awards: '12 Years a Slave' and 'American Hustle' Tally 13 Nominations, Bullock Grabs Three, Lawrence Two, Johansson and Larson, One

Last year "Argo" began its drumbeat of wins from the Critics Choice Movie Awards, which are often a bellwether for the Oscars. "I want to thank the Academy," quipped Ben Affleck as he accepted his prize on the evening he was snubbed by the Academy director's branch. This year's Critics' Choice nominees are led by critics' faves “12 Years a Slave” and “American Hustle,” with thirteen nominations each.

Brie Larson Wins Best Actress Gotham Award; Needs Support for 'Short Term 12' Best Actress Campaign (EXCLUSIVE VIDEO)

What a year Brie Larson has had. She shines in "21 Jump Street," as well as Joseph Gordon-Levitt's feature directing debut "Don Jon" and James Ponsoldt's "The Spectacular Now," which both debuted at Sundance. But her breakthrough lead role is in writer-director Destin Daniel Cretton's SXSW jury-prize winner "Short Term 12." The must-see movie, which is uplifting and moving, could get some critics group and Indie Spirit attention in the next weeks.

Brie Larson Wins Best Actress at Locarno Film Festival Awards for 'Short Term 12'

The 66th Locarno International Film Festival has announced its annual awards, or Palmares. The Pardo d'Oro went to Albert Serra's "La Historia de la Meva Mort." Best Actress went to Brie Larson for "Short Term 12," which also won a special mention, while Balthasar Kormakur picked up the Variety Piazza Grand Award for '2 Guns,' starring Denzel Washington and Mark Wahlberg, Fernando Bacilio took home Best Actor for the Vega brothers' "El Mudo."

Locarno International Film Festival Unveils Lineup, Kicks Off August 7

The 66th Locarno International Film Festival, kicking off August 7, has unveiled its lineup. Included in the fest's selections are Richard Curtis' time-travel romantic comedy "About Time," starring Rachel McAdams and Domhnall Gleeson; Icelandic director Baltasar Kormakur's ("The Deep") "2 Guns," starring Denzel Washington and Mark Wahlberg; and the world premiere of South Korean filmmaker Hong Sangsoo's "Our Sunhi."

LAFF: 'Short Term 12,' 'Crash Reel,' Indiewire Influencers Rock the Regal

I'm getting used to schlepping downtown on Olympic to LAFF and laying down my 8 bucks for parking at LA Live. The theaters at Regal Cinemas were packed for two fest hits, Destin Cretton's SXSW prize-winner "Short Term 12" and Lucy Walker's Sundance entry "Crash Reel," which brought a standing ovation for snowboarder Kevin Pearce.

SXSW Grand Jury Winner 'Short Term 12' Goes to Cinedigm, Plans Awards Push for Brie Larson

Cinedigm has snapped up all North American and Latin American rights to Destin Daniel Cretton's SXSW Grand Jury and Audience award winner "Short Term 12," starring Brie Larson as a troubled foster care worker. The company is eyeing a late summer release, with an awards push for its star, who gives a "career-defining performance," says Vincent Scordino, VP of Cinedigm theatrical acquisitions. "'Short Term 12' is exactly the kind of film we are looking to champion as we expand our theatrical presence."

2013 SXSW Film Awards: 'Short Term 12' Takes Top Narrative Honors, 'William and the Windmill' Wins Documentary Feature

The Grand Jury and Special Award winners of the 2013 SXSW Film Festival were revealed Tuesday in Austin. Destin Cretton's "Short Term 12," starring Brie Larson and John Gallagher Jr. as foster care workers dealing with their own troubled pasts, has taken the Narrative Feature prize, while Ben Nabors' "William and the Windmill," focusing on the author and subject of "The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind," has been awarded the Documentary prize.
