2012 Student Academy Awards Selects Foreign Winners

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has selected three international student film winners, from 51 entries representing 29 countries for the 39th Annual Student Academy Awards competition. The student filmmakers will be brought to Los Angeles to join U.S.-based Student Academy Award recipients for a week of industry activities.

Tim Burton's animated "Frankenweenie" doesn't arrive until October 5, but check out the new trailer (as well as the original 1984 thirty minute live-action short film, which launched Burton's career), below. Last year, many cities (including LA and NY, at LACMA and MoMA respectively) were treated to a retrospective exhibition of Tim Burton's work, from his early sketches and notebooks to the costume worn by Johnny Depp in "Edward Scissorhands."

Aspen Shortsfest Celebrates 20 Years; Festival Runs April 10-15

The Aspen Shortsfest, celebrating its 20th year, runs in Colorado at the Wheeler Opera House April 10-15. Indiewire considers the fest one of the top 50 in the world, with its showcase of short drama, comedy, animation and documentary films. On March 14 the fest's full program will be announced here. Last week in New York, Irish writer-director Terry George and I met at the fabled Monkey Bar off Fifth Avenue to talk about his Oscar-nominated short, "The Shore." The Irish filmmaker was nominated for writing "In the Name of the Father" and "Hotel Rwanda" and directed Don Cheadle to an acting nomination in that film.
