Academy Goes Digital with New Rules

The Board of Governors of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has approved rules for the 87th Academy Awards. The full list of changes is below.

Palm Springs International Shortfest Winners and Panel Takeaways

A record 500 filmmakers from 37 countries attended the 20th annual Palm Springs International Shortfest (June 17-23). The largest short film festival and only short film market in North America screened 330 short films out of 3000 submissions. The Fest awarded more than $115,000 in prizes, including $21,000 in cash awards, in 21 categories.

More than 300 Films Vie for Four Oscar-Qualifying Spots at 20th Palm Springs Shortfest

The Palm Springs International Shortfest is a big deal: one of only 70 or so Oscar-qualifying festivals for shorts, it qualifies the first-place winners of its four competitions to compete for the Academy Award; only the sprawling Los Angeles Film Festival qualifies more for Oscar contention.

Here Are the 58 Short Films Playing the 2014 Tribeca Film Festival

The 2014 Tribeca Film Festival has revealed its lineup of 58 short films set to play the fest, 29 of which are world premieres. The selections were curated from 3,074 submissions, and include shorts from 16 countries, including Australia, Austria, Canada, Denmark, Finland, France, Iceland, India, Iraq, Ireland, Israel, Italy, Japan, Scotland, Switzerland and the UK.

Holocaust Survivor and Subject of Oscar Nominated Short Doc Alice Herz-Sommer Has Died at 110

Sadly, 110-year-old Alice Herz-Sommer, subject of the Oscar nominated short documentary "The Lady in Number 6: Music Saved My Life" died on the morning of February 23, just a week before the film about her extraordinary life heads to the Academy Awards. Herz-Sommer was the oldest living Holocaust survivor.

Talking with the Oscar Nominees for Animated Short Film

I recently chatted with the Oscar nominees for "Feral" (Daniel Sousa), the Annie-winning "Get a Horse!" (Lauren MacMullan), "Mr. Hublot" (Laurent Witz), "Possessions" (Shuhei Morita), and "Room on the Broom" (Max Lang). We discussed personal connections and challenges. Interestingly, all five of the films explore the theme of adjusting to change in our lives.
