The Academy has accepted ten animated short films to advance in the voting process for the 85th Academy Awards out of fifty-six that qualified in the category.

Louisiana Film Prize Showcases Filmmakers to Keep an Eye On

This weekend's inaugural Louisiana Film Prize, featuring 20 short films shot entirely in and around Shreveport-Bossier City, La., offered regular folks (myself included) a chance to vote on which film would receive the $50,000 grand prize. None of my favorites came away victorious, but they left me with some names to watch for in the future.

2012 Student Academy Awards Selects Foreign Winners

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has selected three international student film winners, from 51 entries representing 29 countries for the 39th Annual Student Academy Awards competition. Tim Burton's animated "Frankenweenie" doesn't arrive until October 5, but check out the new trailer (as well as the original 1984 thirty minute live-action short film, which launched Burton's career), below. Last year, many cities (including LA and NY, at LACMA and MoMA respectively) were treated to a retrospective exhibition of Tim Burton's work, from his early sketches and notebooks to the costume worn by Johnny Depp in "Edward Scissorhands."
