Career Watch: Can Eva Green Rise Above Femme Fatale Typecasting?

“Sin City: A Dame to Kill For" did little to add sizzle to the late-summer box office this past weekend after collecting a slim $6.5 million and dismissive reviews. But it’s not from lack of trying on the part of Eva Green. This casting addition to the stylized babes-brutes-and-bullets sequel based on Frank Miller’s lurid comic-book series steamed up more than a few critics’ 3-D glasses as Ava Lord, a diabolical emerald-eyed femme fatale who has a hard time keeping her clothes on.

Strange August Box Office Weekend Boosted by Holdovers, 'Sin City' Bombs, Top Ten Chart

Strange days have found us. Late summer weekends can yield weird results, but rarely like this. Six of the Top Ten positions changed from Friday, which is rare, as two of three new films declined steeply. Meanwhile several of holdovers enjoyed solid jumps. Last week's top two films switched positions, with "Guardians of the Galaxy" (Buena Vista) returning yet again as the top grosser after having been bested by "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles" (Paramount) for the last two weeks.

How Joseph Gordon-Levitt Blew Up Frank Miller & Robert Rodriguez's Return to Sin City, 'A Dame to Kill For'

It's hard to believe that it's been nine years since "Sin City." So much has changed and we're worse off, in many ways, which makes the timing just right to slip back into Frank Miller's deliriously noir hell hole. If anything, "A Dame to Kill For" is bolder yet more cohesive and emotionally involving. It's certainly more immersive in 3-D and it's all green screen with no sets whatsoever. As a result, this dream-like world where "Shock Corridor" collides with "Kiss Me Deadly seems even more tactile and surreal.

Review & Roundup: 'Sin City: A Dame to Kill For' Is Black, White and Flat All Over

Frank Miller and Robert Rodriguez's "Sin City: A Dame to Kill For" promises more sex, violence, shadows and noir-y intrigue. As for the notices so far? Well, let's just say that the critics aren't finding the color palette the only thing about the film that's monotone.

Weinsteins Know What They're Doing: This Eva Green 'Sin City' Poster Is Too Racy for the MPAA

Well, this is clearly a calculated move from the Weinstein Co. They've been playing the MPAA rating card with their upcoming "Sin City: A Dame to Kill For" from the beginning. Their latest move is to plant a story -- here, a sizzling poster of star Eva Green revealing too much of her breasts for the comfort of the MPAA -- with Page Six, and send out as a press release.
