The Female Superhero Finally Strikes Back

Suddenly there's momentum for female superhero movies, thanks to Warner Bros. and DC breaking the ice with Gal Gadot's Wonder Woman in "Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice." This has led to Sony entering the female fray with a Spider-Man spinoff scripted by Lisa Joy ("Burn Notice," "Pushing Daisies"). No confirmation yet if it's Spider-Woman, but it's a significant development. And word is, Marvel is developing its own female counter-attack by turning the spotlight on Scarlett Johansson's Black Widow, with a script to be written by "Guardians of the Galaxy's" Nicole Perlman (but who tweeted on Monday that there has been no active development since turning in her treatment in 2011).

Sony Counters Bad Press with 'Spider-Man' Announcements

Beleaguered Studio chief Amy Pascal countered the negative press about her revolving executive suite--global distribution and marketing chief Jeff Blake announced his departure Tuesday--by doing some spinning of her own. It is not coincidental that the studio revealed their "Spider-Man" plans for the next few years. Plainly, they need to remind skeptics that their biggest franchise (heading toward $4 billion to date worldwide) is proceeding apace.

Friday Box Office: 'Spider-Man 2' Does As Expected, But Lags Behind Recent Marvel Films

"The Amazing Spider-Man 2" (Sony) grossed around $35.5 million for its opening (including $8.7 million from Thursday night shows), with a likely weekend domestic total around $90 million or a bit more. The film is doing as well as expected, and as of Thursday it had already grossed over $150 million in initial strong international dates -- with many territories, including highly anticipated China, still to open.

'The Amazing Spider-Man 2' First Reviews Unspool (TRAILER)

Early reviews of "The Amazing Spider-Man 2," in theaters May 2, have landed, and consensus is wishy-washy. Most critics agree that the film is too long and overstuffed, but that the romantic chemistry between leads Andrew Garfield and Emma Stone is hard to resist.

CinemaCon: Sony Relies on Low-Risk Sequels, Comedies, and Faithfuls Adam Sandler, Will Smith

After seeing several CinemaCon studio presentations in a row, you start to see the retreads coming. The requisite rehash of 2012 hits, adding up to $4.1 billion worldwide, did not reveal that both "The Amazing Spider-Man" and "Men in Black 3" cost too much to return serious profits, or that the global bounty from "Skyfall" was shared with Eon and MGM. As I watched Sony's dog-and-pony show, led off by studio star Adam Sandler trumpeted by Romans in tunics and breastplates, I was checking off a grid.
