Daniel Day-Lewis On Giving 'Lincoln' Voice (NEW VIDEO CLIPS)

Uncanny is the word NPR uses to describe Daniel Day-Lewis' portrayal of the 16th president in Steven Spielberg's "Lincoln."  In this All Things Considered interview, Day-Lewis describes how he found a high register for Honest Abe's distinctive voice that carried across many well-remembered speeches, and reveals his favorites.  The actor wanted to show the lighter side of Lincoln, who used humor to battle back the darkness. Here's Day-Lewis on Lincoln as an entertainer:

Hollywood is in Turnaround

"It's in turnaround" is one of the great Hollywood lines in "Argo" as John Goodman and Alan Arkin throw insider lingo at Ben Affleck's neophyte "associate producer." Truth is, it seems like all of Hollywood is in turnaround right now.

Oscar Watch: Spielberg's 'Lincoln' Faces Marketing Challenges; Fiery New Trailer Targets Political Wonks During Presidential Debate

An intense and patriotic new trailer for Steven Spielberg's "Lincoln" (November 9) premiered during the presidential debate. Political news wonks may seem an odd target audience for a Hollywood movie, but it makes sense for a period drama that is essentially about governing. "Lincoln" spends most of its time following the fierce battle waged by Abraham Lincoln to make his wartime Emancipation Proclamation into law.

Daniel Day-Lewis is the Embodiment of 'Lincoln'; Spielberg Talks Character with EW

Who else but Daniel Day-Lewis could embody Abraham Lincoln so well? Day-Lewis is known for his startling characterizations and method process, from "My Left Foot" and "The Last of the Mohicans" to "Gangs of New York" and "There Will Be Blood," and we should expect no less from his portrayal of President Lincoln in Steven Spielberg's biopic. But, the director clarifies, “Daniel never went into a fugue state" for "Lincoln"; he was always aware of his contemporary surroundings, but was referred to as Mr. President on set. With very little to go by, Day-Lewis's track record (four Oscar noms, two wins) makes it safe to assume his performance will be central in the Awards race.
