Cinedigm Takes 'Narco Cultura,' Sundance Documentary on Drug Cartels

Cinedigm has picked up North America distribution rights to Israeli photographer and filmmaker Shaul Schwarz' documentary "Narco Cultura," which premiered last week at the 2013 Sundance Film Festival. The film looks at the influence of drug cartels on pop culture on both sides of the Mexican-American border, through the eyes of an L.A. narcocorrido singer and a Juarez crime scene investigator.

In an interview, HBO Documentary Films czar Sheila Nevins told me that going forward, HBO will now choose a far smaller number of films to qualify for the Oscars. Well, now HBO has picked one.

Alison Klayman's "Ai Weiwei: Never Sorry" - the "story of a dissident for the digital age" - has been acquired by Sundance Selects for North American distribution.
