Should the New York Times Review Every New York Film Booking?

Before Sundance got started, The New York Times' Manohla Dargis raised a red flag about the issue of too many films flooding the marketplace. While her suggestion that fewer distributors should acquire films was the wrong answer to the right question, the subject became the hot topic of the festival, as folks on all sides of the question grappled with possible solutions.

'Whiplash' Wins Dramatic Competition Grand Jury and Audience Awards at 2014 Sundance Film Festival (UPDATED)

The U.S. Dramatic Competition Grand Jury Prize goes to Damien Chazelle's "Whiplash," which also won the Dramatic Audience Award. "My first time last year was with the short," says Chazelle. 'Life Itself' Director Steve James Gets Up Close with Roger Ebert at the End of His Life (EXCLUSIVE VIDEO)

Roger Ebert and his wife Chaz enthusiastically embraced the idea of a documentary of his memoir "Life Itself," and wanted Chicago filmmaker Steve James, whose "Hoop Dreams" Ebert had discovered at Sundance some 20 years ago, to direct it. James found himself in an unusual situation as Ebert's health took a turn for the worse as he was filming, and Ebert and Chaz allowed the filmmaker access to the last weeks of Ebert's life before he faded from view.
