Behind the High-Frame-Rate Restoration of 'Oklahoma!' Opening TCM Festival

Given Peter Jackson and James Cameron's current embrace of high-frame-rate, there's an added importance to Fox's restoration of the roadshow "Oklahoma!," which opens the TCM Classic Film Fest tonight at the TCL Chinese IMAX Theater. In addition to being shot in Todd-AO large format, the beloved 1955 musical from Rodgers & Hammerstein also experimented with 30 frames to solve the flickering problem and to better stave off competition from TV. The result is almost holographic.

New Restoration of Uncut 'Godzilla: The Japanese Original' to Premiere at TCM Film Fest, Followed by Rialto Release

Exciting news of monstrous proportions: A new restoration of classic “Godzilla: The Japanese Original,” which spawned six decades of sequels, imitations and remakes, is set to debut April 12 at the fifth TCM Classic Film Festival in Hollywood. It then gets a national release from Rialto Pictures, kicking off at New York’s Film Forum, April 18-24.

TCM Classic Film Festival to Open with New Restoration of 'Oklahoma!'

Classic musical fans, take note. The 2014 edition of the TCM Classic Film Festival will open with the world premiere of a brand new restoration of Rodgers & Hammerstein’s “Oklahoma!” TCM's go-to host Robert Osborne will introduce the film, with Oscar-winning star Shirley Jones in person.

TCM Classic Film Festival Is Four Day Feast of the Familiar, 'I Know Where I'm Going' (TRAILERS)

This is no festival for newbies. The audience for the 4th edition of the TCM Classic Film Festival is completely at home at the Chinese, watching their favorite films on the big screen. These filmgoers have planned their vacations around this (expensive) festival and know what they like. Unlike other fests, this one is not so much for discoveries as for re-visits.

The 2013 TCM Classic Film Festival (April 25-28) continues to add more stars and screenings to its slate, including Mel Brooks in conversation following "The Twelve Chairs," Mickey Rooney and Jonathan Winters appearing with epic nutty ensemble comedy "It's a Mad Mad Mad Mad World" and the already announced Max von Sydow tribute has added a new screening of Sydney Pollack's "Three Days of the Condor."
