When New Directors/New Films opens Wednesday night at the Museum of Modern Art in Manhattan, it will mark another ambitious survey of fresh talent and movies, beginning with the D.C.-sniper inspired “Blue Caprice” (its catalog description begins: “The ability of innocence to embrace evil is a chillingly reality"--and yes, someone was paid to write that). Guaranteed to grab ND/NF audiences by the throat – just as it’s been doing since last year’s Telluride – is “The Act of Killing,” (TOH! review here) directed by Joshua Oppenheimer, who cast his movie with real killers who celebrate the art and craft of murder.

As the 2013 Berlin International Film Festival wound up, the Golden Bear went to Calin Peter Netzer's Romanian drama "Child's Pose," about a wealthy mother trying to extricate her imprisoned son. The Silver Bear for best director went to American director David Gordon Green for "Prince Avalanche," which debuted at Sundance.

With his documentary "The Act of Killing," Joshua Oppenheimer has reset the bar for tragi-comedy. As in, don’t even bother trying, Hollywood. Ever again. In fact, why don’t we just dispense with next year’s Oscar race right now and give both the best documentary and the best feature award to this film? It even has a musical within it, so it could take that category at the Globes, too.
