Sony Counters Bad Press with 'Spider-Man' Announcements

Beleaguered Studio chief Amy Pascal countered the negative press about her revolving executive suite--global distribution and marketing chief Jeff Blake announced his departure Tuesday--by doing some spinning of her own. It is not coincidental that the studio revealed their "Spider-Man" plans for the next few years. Plainly, they need to remind skeptics that their biggest franchise (heading toward $4 billion to date worldwide) is proceeding apace.

Mid-Year VFX Report: 'Godzilla' and Marvel Rule

Without a "Gravity" this year, the wow factor might not be as strong but certainly the Oscar race is now wide open. Yet in surveying the first-half of 2014, only "Godzilla" looks like a potential nominee. But there are still plenty of bake-off contenders, with solid VFX work on display in "Captain America: The Winter Soldier," "The Amazing Spider-Man 2," "X-Men: Days of Future Past," "Maleficent," and "Edge of Tomorrow."

Box Office Top Ten: 'Neighbors' Pushes 'Amazing Spider-Man 2' Out of Top Slot

Original Seth Rogen comedy "Neighbors" (Universal) easily won the weekend. The race for first place wasn't even close against the second weekend of "The Amazing Spider-Man 2" (Sony). When comic-book movies open strong they usually fall off dramatically.

Friday Box Office: 'Neighbors' Soars, 'Spider-Man' Gets Caught in Its Web with Big Fall

Universal's "Neighbors," starring Seth Rogen and Zac Efron, proved once again how hungry audiences are for laughs at the movies with a $19.6 million Friday night gross (including $2.5 million from the previous night). This is the best one-day figure for a live-action comedy since "Ted" (also Universal) in June 2012, which grossed just over $20 million, for a 3-day total of $54 million.

Does Spidey's Andrew Garfield Have the Right Star Stuff?

Critics are less enthused about “The Amazing Spider-Man 2” than they were about 2012’s reboot of the comic-book franchise. The Chicago Tribune review headline declaring the sequel as “just adequate, too long” pretty much nails it. What is amazing, however, is the praise being heaped upon the more intimate moments shared by the cast members over the web-slinging action sequences. Much of that is due to the edgy yet playful performance by Andrew Garfield in the title role.

Box Office Top Ten: 'The Amazing Spider-Man 2' Clears the Field, But Sets No Records

This year the official summer season launches, as did last, with a Marvel comic sequel. But Sony's costly "The Amazing Spider-Man 2," while it opened $2 million ahead of the expected gross of $90 million, is nowhere close to last year's Marvel entry. While it's scoring overseas, it could face a long road to profitability.

Friday Box Office: 'Spider-Man 2' Does As Expected, But Lags Behind Recent Marvel Films

"The Amazing Spider-Man 2" (Sony) grossed around $35.5 million for its opening (including $8.7 million from Thursday night shows), with a likely weekend domestic total around $90 million or a bit more. The film is doing as well as expected, and as of Thursday it had already grossed over $150 million in initial strong international dates -- with many territories, including highly anticipated China, still to open.

Sony Imageworks Gets Electrified Over Cutting-Edge 'Amazing Spider-Man 2' VFX (VIDEOS)

The "Spider-Man" franchise serves as a good barometer for assessing the recent VFX evolution of Sony Pictures Imageworks. In "The Amazing Spider-Man 2," though, it's about the power to energize Electro (Jamie Foxx), thanks to advancements in lighting (using the 3D application Katana) and rendering through ray-tracing along with a more efficient workflow that empowers the artists.

'The Amazing Spider-Man 2' First Reviews Unspool (TRAILER)

Early reviews of "The Amazing Spider-Man 2," in theaters May 2, have landed, and consensus is wishy-washy. Most critics agree that the film is too long and overstuffed, but that the romantic chemistry between leads Andrew Garfield and Emma Stone is hard to resist.
