After 'The Canyons,' Strange Tale of 'The Jesuit'

My strange tale. Five years ago I wrote an original script titled "The Jesuit" which I was set to direct starring Oscar Isaac when the financing entity, Maya, collapsed. It was meant to be a return to my action exploitation roots, i.e., "Rolling Thunder." I also wanted to make a Latin film.

Celebrity Campaigns Ignite Kickstarter Crowdfunding

It looks like all of Spike Lee's noisy tub-thumping for his recent successful Kickstarter campaign was not only good for him and his new movie but for the site itself. 47% of his backers had never visited the site before, reports the site's Perry Chen, Yancey Strickler and Charles Adler in a blog post entitled "The Truth About Spike Lee and Kickstarter" in which they defend celebrity crowdfunding campaigns.

This Weekend: See 'Spectacular Now,' Belgium's 'Our Children' and Yes, 'The Canyons'; Skip 'Smurfs 2'

What an eclectic bag this weekend brings. The two must-sees are in the indie-arthouse sector: Belgium's 2012 Oscar entry "Our Children," a devastating real-life story of a mother driven to murder, and James Ponsoldt's coming-of-age Sundance hit "The Spectacular Now," starring Shailene Woodley and Miles Teller.

Review and Roundup: In Defense of Paul Schrader's Misunderstood 'The Canyons'

Like the film's infamously trying production and its central character Tara -- who Lindsay Lohan acts the hell out of -- "Canyons" careens wildly from one extreme to the next. But it isn't just so-bad-it's-good kitsch. "The Canyons" ultimately is good, hard to admire, yes, but harder to look away from.
