Stream This: Belgian Oscar Nominee 'Broken Circle Breakdown'

If I were picking a foreign Oscar winner this year on the basis of what the entire Academy would like best, it would be Belgian entry "Broken Circle Breakdown," a sexy and tragic musical family drama adapted from a stage musical, featuring bluegrass music. Until now, it has not played in many theaters and has not been widely viewed by the Academy at large--who just got their five foreign screeners yesterday.

Box Office Prospects for the Foreign Language Oscar Contenders

For the final five for the Foreign Language Oscar, being in the public eye and getting attention is critical this year more than ever. For the first time, the Academy will send screeners of the final five to all voting members. In the past, only those who actually signed in to L.A. and N.Y. screenings and saw all five of the nominees were allowed to vote.

Academy Narrows Foreign Language List to Nine

Six foreign films films picked by several hundred Los Angeles Academy voters --members from various branches who see the requisite number of movies submitted for Oscar consideration--as well as three added by an executive committee hand-picked by producer Mark Johnson--make up the shortlist of nine foreign films that will be narrowed down to five nominees.
