Talking Johnny Depp's Oscar-Nominated Makeup and Hair in 'The Lone Ranger'

When it came to Johnny Depp's trippy Tonto in "The Lone Ranger," there were two makeup and hair challenges: the middle-aged Native American as well as the old man (a tribute to legendary Dick Smith's Jack Crabb from "Little Big Man"). We get the lowdown from Oscar-nominees Joel Harlow, who's become Depp's go-to makeup guy, and hairstylist Gloria Casny.

The "Gravity" juggernaut, the surprising entry of "The Lone Ranger," the new and improved "Iron Man 3," the ascendance of "Star Trek Into Darkness" and the J.J. Abrams factor, and the power of the eponymous dragon from "The Desolation of Smaug." We reflect on the great year for VFX with the lead supervisors of all five Oscar nominees.

Crafts Roundup: Disco, Flappers and Old Men Dominate the Makeup and Hairstyling Oscar Race

The Oscar race for makeup and hairstyling has been very contentious. Making the shortlist were "American Hustle," "Dallas Buyers Club," "The Great Gatsby," "Hansel & Gretel Witch Hunters," "The Hunger Games: Catching Fire," "Jackass Presents: Bad Grandpa," and "The Lone Ranger." However, the list of snubs include "The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug," "Rush," "12 Years a Slave," "Lee Daniels' The Butler," "Oz the Great and Powerful," and "Star Trek Into Darkness," and "Man of Steel."

Quentin Tarantino Lists Top Films of 2013, Including 'The Lone Ranger' and 'This is the End'

Quentin Tarantino sat out the ten best lists last year because he was in fevered production on "Django Unchained." This year he has already posted his alphabetical ten best list of 2013 so far on his site. While the Oscar-winner is an Academy member, don't look for his taste to be replicated by the Academy at large.

Weekend Top Ten: 'The Conjuring' Triumphs While Box Office Slumps, R.I.P.D. Is D.O.A.

Warner Bros.' low-budget "The Conjuring" easily topped the weekend, with Fox/DreamWorks' "Turbo" placing only number three as the best of the rest. Lionsgate's "Red 2" struggled to keep pace with its predecessor, while Universal's "R.I.P.D." is lining up to be one of the summer's biggest flops. Altogether, four new openers with production budgets totaling around $400 million grossed less than $100 million this weekend, compared to the $161 million that one film, "The Dark Knight Rises," took in exactly one year ago. That led to an overall top 10 shortfall of about $50 million, as 2013 continues to struggle to catch up.

Weekend Box Office Top Ten: Sequels to 'Despicable Me' and 'Grown Ups' Push Original 'Pacific Rim' to Soft Third

Three reliables led a strong summer weekend box office: sequels, animation and ensemble comedies. "Despicable Me 2" came out on top in a close race, with Adam Sandler and company marking a strong second with "Grown Ups 2" (Sony). Warner Bros.' costly original "Pacific Rim" exceeded its estimates with a still soft $38.3 million and a long way to go to before delivering a profit. Twentieth Century Fox's "The Heat" continued to show strength, moving ahead of both Disney's "The Lone Ranger" and "Monsters University."

Why Disney Failed with 'The Lone Ranger,' and Universal is Succeeding with a Smart Strategy

With the box office implosion of $250 million "The Lone Ranger" wrangling less than $50 million for the July 4th long weekend, it looks likely that Disney is facing a "John Carter" style write-off again, to the tune of some $150 million. The mistakes that Disney made were made for a reason. They all know how this particular Perfect Storm came to pass.

Weekend Box Office: 'Despicable Me 2' Overperforms, Leaves 'The Lone Ranger' in the Dust

Universal's much-bigger-than-expected "Despicable Me 2" led the holiday weekend, outgrossing Disney's disappointing "The Lone Ranger" by two thirds. (It has amassed a remarkable $142 million in five days, while "The Lone Ranger" scored $48 million total.) Despite "The Lone Ranger," which marks the third big-budget studio disappointment of the summer, the three-day post-Independence Day holiday weekend far outscored last year's box office top ten by 12 %.
