From 'Broad City' to 'Game of Thrones,' an Emmy Nominations Wish List

When the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences doles out Emmy nominations each summer, I often wake to the announcement like a naughty kid on Christmas Day: staring down a lump of coal. In that spirit, here's a wish list of gifts I hope to find under Emmy's tree Thursday morning in the major categories. I promise I've been very good this year.

Things I Learned at HBO's Emmy Party, from Sorkin's 'Newsroom' Status to Soderbergh's 'Glue'

HBO knows how to throw a good bash, and their annual Emmy after-party at the Pacific Design Center was a huge improvement on the sad and gloomy death-obsessed 65th Emmy Awards, which nonetheless drew the largest audience in eight years. Who are these mythical TV Academy voters who misled most of the Gold Derby Emmy predicters? I did terribly on my picks but came out ahead of many others, it turned out.

'Newsroom' Review and Recap 2.7: The Slap (SPOILERS)

When the season began, with talk of a lawsuit and of the need to immediately retract a huge story -- a claim that U.S. troops had committed a war crime by using sarin gas on civilians -- it appeared that institutional bias was indeed likely to be a culprit, the slant view of liberal journalists who see what they believe and assume the worst about the military. Now look what we actually got.

'The Newsroom' 2.1 Review: "First Thing We Do, Let's Kill All the Lawyers" (TRAILER)

The second season of Aaron Sorkin's HBO drama series "The Newsroom" promises to be every bit as entertaining as its first -- if not more so, due to a unifying structural choice that takes fuller advantage of novelistic narrative freedom of post-"Sopranos" cable drama.

'The Newsroom' Season 1 Finale: 'The Greater Fool' Rushes In, Can't Help Falling in Love

Though not a strong episode, the season finale of "The Newsroom" was weirdly likeable by virtue of its commitment to sheer rom-com craziness. Because that is, for better or worse, what the show boils down to: A large serving of romance, with a side of news.

'The Newsroom' Episode 9 Review and Recap: 'The Blackout Part 2' -- Whither the Mock Debate?

Sunday's all-new episode of "The Newsroom" was a moderate letdown from last week's strong episode, with promises of a mock debate barely materializing. But Sloan, the best thing about the Sorkin-scripted show, did get in a great one-liner: "Me? FUCK you."

Life Imitates 'The Newsroom,' as CNN Heads Mainstream

In the last episode of Aaron Sorkin's "The Newsroom," his fictional news show started to chase tabloid stories in an attempt to stop their ratings plunge. Well, in real life, number three network CNN is hurting for viewers, with its worst ratings in 20 years, and is now looking to go mainstream, according to The New York Post.
