Arthouse Audit: 'Cesar Chavez,' 'The Raid 2,' 'Finding Vivian Maier' & 'Mistaken for Strangers' Find Initial Success

Four new specialized/independent releases from diverse backgrounds showed initial strength this weekend. Two of these -- "Cesar Chavez" (Pantelion/Lionsgate) and "The Raid 2" (Sony Pictures Classics) -- are intended for wider release. Two others -- "Finding Vivian Maier" (IFC) and "Mistaken for Strangers" (Abramorama) -- are documentaries focusing, as have so many hits in the medium, on aspects of the creative process, and seem headed to decent or better art-house success.

'The Raid 2': A Fight Between So Cool and Way Too Long (NYT VIDEO)

Gareth Evans' "The Raid 2," which debuted to much internet fanfare at this past Sundance, is at once hypnotically kinetic and groaningly overlong. Indeed, that's the main fight being fought in the film -- between its terrific, fast-paced action sequences and its dragging plot setup.

'The Raid 2' Gets a US Release Date (RED BAND TRAILER)

Sony Pictures Classics and Stage 6 Films will release 'The Raid 2' in the US on March 28. The film will have its World Premiere at the upcoming 2014 Sundance Film Festival. Check out the film's intense Red Band trailer.
