Career Watch: Does 'Divergent''s Shailene Woodley Have the Right Stuff to Be a Movie Star?

Critics fell hard for Shailene Woodley in her film debut as George Clooney’s pained yet perceptive teen daughter in 2011’s "The Descendants." But now that she is the heroine of "Divergent," a just-opened sci-fi action franchise based on a popular series of young-adult novels, the 22-year-old actress is presumed to be in the running as the next Jennifer Lawrence ("The Hunger Games") or Kristen Stewart ("The Twilight Saga"). However, what she really is--according to reviewers at least-- is the main saving grace of the first film in a trilogy that carries a tepid 41% approval rating at Rotten Tomatoes.

'Salinger' Catches Solid Opening Numbers

This weekend is usually the calm before the storm as a range of upcoming significant films get attention at Toronto. Normally otherwise occupied distributors avoid this post-Labor Day date like the plague. Nonetheless a likely record 30 new specialized/indie releases found theaters in New York and Los Angeles, including six from this year's Sundance Film Festival and two from the currently running Toronto Fest. Of the films reported grosses, only one -- Weinstein's "Salinger" -- showed significant strength, unusual for this time of year.

Arthouse Audit: 'Spectacular Now' and 'Blue Jasmine' Break Out, Summer Specialty Hot Spot

For the fourth week out of the last five, a new limited release showed major strength. Unusual for mid-to-late summer, A24's "The Spectacular Now" attained post-Labor Day-level opening grosses. Also showing rare summer strength are Fox Searchlight's "The Way, Way Back," Weinstein Co.'s "Fruitvale Station" and Sony Pictures Classics' "Blue Jasmine." These commercial breakouts could lead to later awards consideration--and a new specialty paradigm.

'2 Guns' Blasts Mild August Weekend; 'Smurfs 2' Lags Stateside; 'Conjuring' Most Profitable Movie Ever Made?

Universal returned to the #1 spot with Denzel Washington-Mark Wahlberg actioner "2 Guns," the latest in the studio's diverse string of successful openings, after an expensive detour with the dreadful opening of "R.I.P.D." "2 Guns" led a top 10 that totaled about $120 million in gross, a jump of $8 million over last year. Meantime, the domestic take for "The Smurfs 2" disappointed, although Sony reports better international returns.

'2 Guns' Leads Bland Friday Grosses; Sony's 'Smurfs 2' Opens in Third, Bigger Overseas

It's August. Universal is heading for its third number one opener of the summer as the Denzel Washington/Mark Wahlberg crime actioner "2 Guns" grossed $10 million Friday. That's the lowest number for a top film for a Friday since the pre-summer April 26 first day of "Pain and Gain," but is typical of an August opening. Overall grosses for the top 10 were slightly above the same week a year ago.
