EXCLUSIVE: Behind the Scenes at Studio Ghibli and Miyazaki's Oscar-Contender 'The Wind Rises' (TRAILER)

A contender for the animated feature Oscar, the subtitled "The Wind Rises" (Disney) is now playing a one-week Oscar qualifying run in Los Angeles and New York in its Japanese subtitled version. Possibly the last film from Hayao Miyazaki, the Walt Disney of Japan, who won the animated Oscar for "Spirited Away," "The Wind Rises" is not aimed at young kids. Gorgeously drawn, it's an historical true story of the brilliant designer behind the Zero fighter plane that wrecked havoc in World War II. I interview Geoffrey Wexler, a high-ranking Studio Ghibli executive who was in town to start dubbing the English version that Disney will release on February 21.

Arthouse Audit: 'Book Thief' Survives Critics, Oscar-Contender 'Wind Rises' Sells Out Two Theaters

´╗┐This week's newbies are a mixed bag. "The Book Thief," a rare major studio platform release, overcame less than great reviews for a respectable showing, while Disney's release of Hayao Miyazaki's subtitled animated feature "The Wind Rises" sold out most shows at two one-week-only theaters. The rest of the newcomers fell far short of these two, with Alex Gibney's documentary "The Armstrong Lie" the best of the mediocre bunch.

This Weekend: See Gibney's 'The Armstrong Lie,' Miyazaki's 'The Wind Rises,' and Marvel's Fun 'Thor: The Dark World' (TRAILERS)

This weekend movie-goers can take their pick from a shrewd documentary about Lance Armstrong's fall from grace ("The Armstrong Lie"), an enjoyable turn-your-brain-off Marvel entry about a hot guy with a hammer ("Thor: The Dark World"), or an animated drama from one of the greats of the medium, Hayao Miyazaki ("The Wind Rises").

Animation Oscar Frontrunners--Will Pixar Skip This Round?

Could this be an award season with no Pixar Oscar nominee? In a weak year for top animated features, enough have been officially submitted to the Academy for Oscar consideration to likely make a race with five nominees, even though several of the films have yet to qualify via a required Los Angeles run. In the eventuality that five films don't nab high enough ratings of 7.5 (out of 6--poor--to 10--excellent), though, there could be fewer entries.

Hayao Miyazaki Officially Explains His Retirement, Plus Review Roundup of 'The Wind Rises'

Hayao Miyazaki released an official statement to the media September 6 on his reasoning behind his previously announced retirement. While he says that he intends to keep working in various capacities for the next decade, he won't return to the directing chair. The production period on his films continues to increase -- his current film, "The Wind Rises," took five years to make -- and at that rate, he points out, "the studio can't survive."
