Lionsgate Follows 'Twilight/Hunger Games' Template by Extending 'Divergent' "Trilogy"

Not only does Lionsgate/Summit commit to an ongoing production--which is the closest the movie companies come to episodic television, allowing fans to invest in the creation of a world over time--and hang on to beloved actors over a series of films, but "Divergent" is now extending the life of its "trilogy."

REVIEW: Does 'Divergent' Have Legs?

Anti-fascist (sort of) and pro-girl (definitely), “Divergent’ – the first in the trilogy-to-be based on the Veronica Roth novels -- is meant to position Shailene Woodley as the next in the Jennifer Lawrence/Emma Watson/Lily Collins line of YA-inspired warrior princesses. But Woodley plays another kind of anti-super-heroine, one possessed of reluctance and doubt, as well as canniness, cunning and (BTW) great hair. The question is whether her movie has legs. It goes wide Friday, March 21.

Third 'Divergent' Movie 'Allegiant' Added to 2016 Summit Schedule Before the First One Opens, Burger Won't Return (VIDEO)

Before the first "Divergent" film has opened (March 21, 2014), Lionsgate's Summit Entertainment has scheduled "Allegiant," the third film adaptation of Veronica Roth's bestselling "Divergent" trilogy, to open wide on March 18, 2016. "Insurgent," the second film, will come to theaters on March 20, 2015. Summit appears to be waiting to see how the first one fares with critics and audiences before assigning a director to the last two films.

Post-'Twilight,' EW Lays Claim to New YA Movie Traffic Booster, 'Divergent,' Starring Shailene Woodley and Theo James

The "Twilight" franchise is over, and "Hunger Games" is spawning more would-be young adult novel-turned-movie-franchises. Entertainment Weekly is pushing what could (or could not) be the next big YA craze on their cover this week: "Divergent." Based on Veronica Roth's novel of the same title, the film takes place in a dystopian Chicago where society is split into five factions; when kids turn 16, they take a test to determine which of the factions they're best suited for. Stars Shailene Woodley and Theo James, along with director Neil Burger, sat down with EW to talk the new film, which hits theaters March 21, 2014. Highlights below.
