Top Ten Box Office: 'Frozen' and 'Catching Fire' Lead Limping Pack; 'Inside Llewyn Davis' Starts Off Huge

The weekend following the Thanksgiving holiday is usually one of the year's weakest. The top two films, Disney's "Frozen" and Lionsgate's "Catch Fire," both grossed more than any previous film for a similar weekend at $31.6 and $27 million respectively, blowing past previous record holder "Tangled" at $21.6 million.

Weekend Top Ten: 'Catching Fire' and 'Frozen' Take Off

One expected blockbuster, "The Hunger Games: Catching Fire," easily matched expectations with a record gross for the season of $161 million, while the next tentpole up, Disney's animated "Frozen," took in nearly $270,000 on a single Los Angeles screen in advance of its national rollout next pre-holiday Wednesday.

'Thor' Holds Top Weekend Spot Against Surprise Challenger 'Best Man's Holiday'

Marvel/Disney's "Thor: The Dark World," aided both by upbeat audience reaction and the lack of product in theaters aimed at the young action-movie demo, roared back to Number One in its second weekend. Universal's "The Best Man Holiday" beat it out for top spot on Friday, but fell back to score more than $30 million, even more impressive as it played at some 1,800 fewer theaters than "Thor" ("Best Man"'s per screen average was actually 50% better).

'Best Man Holiday' Beats 'Thor' For #1 Friday; 'Nebraska' Shows Initial Strength

In an unexpectedly close race for top position this weekend, Universal sequel "The Best Man Holiday" was the top grosser yesterday, taking in $10,700,000 and edging out the second Friday for "Thor: The Dark World" (Buena Vista). The latter took in just under $10.5 million, falling 67% from its opening figure.

Weekend Top Ten: 'Thor' Bashes Box Office, 'Ender's Game' Collapses

Led by a strong performance by 3-D enhanced "Thor: The Dark World," overall grosses came in about equal to last year, keeping pace with the 2012 year-to-date total. (2013's top ten grossed $159 million against $161 million last year.) With $86,109,000 for the weekend, "Thor" came in just behind "Skyfall"'s stellar opening last year, but the heavy lifting came from the rest of the top 10.

Friday Box Office: 'Thor' Strong, Not Mighty, 'Last Vegas' Lures Boomers, '12 Years' Passes $12 Million

Adding to its stellar first-week overseas haul of more than $150 million, "Thor: The Dark World" is grabbing more than half of Friday's Top 10 box office take. With $31,633,000 (including Thursday night shows) already in the till the Marvel/Disney sequel will score an easy #1 for the weekend. However, the film is unlikely to cross $100 million for the weekend. Indeed the number won't even be a record for the Veteran's Day holiday.

This Weekend: See Gibney's 'The Armstrong Lie,' Miyazaki's 'The Wind Rises,' and Marvel's Fun 'Thor: The Dark World' (TRAILERS)

This weekend movie-goers can take their pick from a shrewd documentary about Lance Armstrong's fall from grace ("The Armstrong Lie"), an enjoyable turn-your-brain-off Marvel entry about a hot guy with a hammer ("Thor: The Dark World"), or an animated drama from one of the greats of the medium, Hayao Miyazaki ("The Wind Rises").

Review Roundup: Critics Mixed on 'Thor: The Dark World' -- Generic Marvel Entry With Too Little of Loki?

Following its premiere in London, first reviews for "Thor: The Dark World" (November 8) are coming in, mixed so far. Some critics find the film a generic exercise, straight out of the Marvel machine, with too little Loki (Tom Hiddleston), who is locked up in a glass box for much of his screen time. Others praise the film, with Slash Film even going so far as to call it "one of the best Marvel films to date." More below.
