Check out the first trailer for Shola Lynch's documentary "Free Angela & All Political Prisoners," an official selection at Toronto in September. The film details the turbulent life of radical activist Angela Davis, a member of the Communist Party, associate of the Black Panthers and UCLA philosophy professor who was charged in 1970 with conspiracy in kidnapping and murdering Judge Harold Haley from the Marin County courthouse.

Busy Ryan Gosling to Pre-Sell Directorial Debut 'How to Catch a Monster' at TIFF

Heartthrob and meme-inspirer Ryan Gosling is announcing his directorial debut. Gosling plans to write and direct fantasy noir thriller "How to Catch a Monster," starring "Mad Men" regular Christina Hendricks. She plays a single mother of two in a surreal future city that is on the decline. When she gets caught in a dark dreamlike underworld, her teenage son finds a secret road leading to a hidden underwater town.

Joss Whedon to Write, Direct Marvel World S.H.I.E.L.D. Pilot for ABC

Joss Whedon and "Avengers" fans everywhere rejoice: ABC has ordered a "S.H.I.E.L.D." pilot from the "Buffy" scribe which will focus on the secretive military cum-police force of the Avengers universe. Whedon will direct, pending his schedule, and will co-write the pilot along with Jed Whedon and Maurissa Tancharoen.

TIFF Watch: Cohen Media and Focus World Pick Up Doueiri's 'The Attack'

Cohen Media Group and Focus World are joining forces for the North American 2013 release of Ziad Doueiri's "The Attack," a drama-thriller following an Arab surgeon who uncovers a shocking secret about his late wife, a victim of a suicide bombing in Tel Aviv. The film will be a special presentation at Toronto in September.

TIFF Preview: Fox Searchlight Pushes Oscar Contender 'The Sessions,' Releases Poster

Fox Searchlight, which snapped up Ben Lewin's "The Sessions" (formerly "The Surrogate") at Sundance for $6 million, holds high Oscar hopes for film, which stars John Hawkes as journalist and poet Mark O'Brien, who is afflicted with polio but wants to have sex. (Think "My Left Foot.") Searchlight is pushing the film into the Oscar race at Toronto, as it did Oscar-winner "Slumdog Millionaire."

TIFF Completes 2012 Festival Lineup with Masters, Discovery, Mavericks & Docs: Plus Who's Showing Up

Toronto 37 has rounded out its 2012 festival titles, adding 40-plus titles to its massive slate. New films announced in the Masters program include the North American premieres of Michael Haneke's "Amour," Olivier Assayas's "Something in the Air," Abbas Kiarostami's "Like Someone in Love" and the world premieres of Michael Winterbottom's "Everyday" and Goran Paskaljevic's "When Day Breaks."
