#SXSW: Rodriguez, Brody, Antal Talk Predators, Spy Kids 4

It was a smart move for Fox to hand over the reins to FX whiz Robert Rodriguez on a Predator sequel. He promised to deliver them a $45-million movie--modest, for an action sequel--which he wrote and produced at his Austin Troublemaker Studios (with location shoots in Hawaii) with Nimrod Antal (Kontroll) at the helm. Rodriguez offers studios a one-stop shop on a somewhat smaller scale than Peter Jackson's Weta operation in New Zealand. The deal is, they leave him alone to deliver the goods. "Do your thing and make it cool and make it a Troublemaker Studios movie," Fox told Rodriguez. "We’ll release it, but you don’t have to make it a Fox movie."

Trailer Watch: Scorsese's Boardwalk Empire

Many top directors are turning to HBO. Given the level of interest in quality dramas for adults at the studios, who wouldn't? HBO's the last place willing to spend big bucks for that kind of cinema.

#SXSW: First Hit is Cold Weather

At the SXSW opening night party, Jason Reitman showed me the trailer (below) for Aaron Katz's third feature Cold Weather on his iPhone. Reitman was psyched to see it, and I was intrigued, but it was up against Michel Gondry's Cannes doc Thorn in My Heart, which I needed to see in order to interview him Sunday.

Green Zone: New Clip

It doesn't surprise me that Green Zone is being targeted as a leftie movie. That's because the film--from Brit Paul Greengrass--wears its politics on its sleeve. To me, the film bears the ring of truth, and made me fighting mad. But politics aside, the exhilarating filmmaking alone makes it a must-see.

Weekend Preview: Pattinson vs. Damon in Melodramatic Remember Me and Political Green Zone

Heading into its second weekend, Disney’s Alice in Wonderland will continue to score big numbers. According to Flixster, the Tim Burton fantasy (which has a Tomatoscore of 52%) is pacing about five times ahead of this week’s new releases. That's not hard, because none of the newcomers are crossing over from their target demo. (Trailers are on the jump.) UPDATE: Box office watchers can now place bets on their predictions.

Twilight's Pattinson Tests Marquee Value with Remember Me

A fellow-Hollywood scribe (who tends to like a lot) has seen Summit's Rob Pattinson romance Remember Me and says it's strong. (I'll see it soon but can't write about it yet). This "family" trailer (below) is much better than the last one.
