Weekend Preview: Tough Girls vs. Male Juveniles, Must-Sees Hanna & Meek's Cutoff

Comedies Your Highness and Arthur present mainstream escapist fun and antics (from the likes of Danny McBride, James Franco and Russell Brand), as well as thankless supporting females (Natalie Portman, Zooey Deschanel, Greta Gerwig, Jennifer Garner) while Focus's Hanna leads the line of strong female leads (Saoirse Ronan and Cate Blanchett), followed by Meek's Cutoff's Michelle Williams and Soul Surfer's Annasophia Robb and Helen Hunt. Vera Farmiga steals the show in well-reviewed indie release Henry's Crime; Uma Thurman adds star power to Ceremony. The Flixster forecast puts must-see Hanna on top. Details, reviews, pictures and trailers for this weekend's offerings are below.

Trailer Watch: Is Crazy, Stupid, Love Gosling's Crazy, Stupid Sellout?

We hope Ryan Gosling isn't selling out. But judging from this trailer, it looks like he has abandoned his usual dark indie depths for pretty-boy womanizing. The pairing of Gosling and Steve Carell and co-stars Julianne Moore and Emma Stone may in fact be the best-looking rom-com since...a really long time ago. The film, from directors Glenn Ficarra and John Requa (I Love You, Phillip Morris, Bad Santa), comes out July 29.

Arthur Early Reviews: "Dispiritingly Witless," "Crude instead of Whimsical"
In this remake of the 1981 classic, Arthur, Russell Brand takes on Dudley Moore's comic drunk, joined by Helen Mirren (in John Gielgud's butler role) and rival girlfriends Greta Gerwig and Jennifer Garner. Directed by Jason Winer (TV's Modern Family) from Peter Baynham's revamp of Steve Gordon's original script, this ensemble relationship comedy is failing to find critical validation. In The Works: Nolan Helps Snyder with Superman; Working Title's Trash; Flight of Conchords's Hobbit

- Zack Snyder is under pressure. Empire talks with the Sucker Punch and Superman: Man Of Steel director, who is confronting skepticism following Punch's critical beating. Producer Christopher Nolan, thankfully, is offering plenty of help for the Superman reboot. No surprise, with people asking questions like, "Does Sucker Punch Spell Doom For Superman: Man of Steel?" Says Snyder, "Chris has been amazingly generous with me [with the Superman storyline]…He's making [The Dark Knight Rises] but he takes time if we're knocking around ideas for the script." And why wouldn't he? "Honestly," adds Snyder, "he wants us to make the best movie we can and he's just interested in helping with that without messing up the process. I think it's amazingly generous of him."
