Top Ten Box Office Takeaways: Holiday Box Office Suffers Worst Drop of the Year

This fourth of July weekend, the box office, led yet again by Michael Bay's latest "Transformers," suffered a serious collapse. The Top Ten grossed $113 million. That is $107 million less than last year (when the 4th fell on a Thursday). It's worse than that -- no June or July weekend has grossed this low since 2005, nor any grossed lower for the holiday weekend this century. Some anomalies contributed including the lingering effects of World Cup issues.

Holiday Box Office Fireworks Fizzle as Only 'Transformers' Shows Much Spark

Though it took a big second Friday drop, "Transformers: Age of Extinction" had no trouble dominating an anemic Fourth of July box office. How weak was the day? The three new openers combined only grossed about $1 million more than last year's holiday opener "The Lone Ranger" on the same Friday.

Career Watch: Mark Wahlberg Deftly Commands 'Transformers,' But Isn't It Time for More Challenging Roles?

Unlike his predecessor Shia LeBeouf, whose rep as a serious artist took a nosedive whenever another “Transformers” sequel clunked onto the screen, Mark Wahlberg had no such problem taking the lead in the fourth entry in the franchise. He easily balances his duties as both a strict single dad and a human recruit in the war against those big bad robots in “Transformers: Age of Extinction.”

'Transformers 4' Delivers Year's First $100-Million Weekend, Jolie's 'Maleficent' Passes $200 Million Domestic, 'Fault' Woodley's Second $100-Million Grosser

"Transformers: Age of Extinction" overcame the worst reviews of Michael Bay's career to deliver the summer's first $100 million weekend. The rest of the world came in just over double that at $201 million. With the World Cup having finished its intense initial round and little competition from new films either stateside or abroad, Paramount picked the perfect weekend for the return of the mighty Hasbro franchise.

ILM Reanimates Badass Transformers for 'Age of Extinction'

Keeping up with Marvel isn't easy, but Michael Bay and Industrial Light & Magic have brought new life to the badass Hasbro bots in "Transformers: Age of Extinction," introducing a sleek new sci-fi design and a new army of fire-breathing Dinobots. At the same time, Bay has smartly ventured into China and has replaced Shia LaBeouf with Mark Wahlberg as a single dad and failed inventor, which also kicks the franchise into higher gear.

'Transformers: Age of Extinction' Review Roundup: A Visually Impressive, Scattered Destruction Fest (VIDEO)

"Transformers: Smash-a-thon 4000"--sorry, that should be "Transformers: Age of Extinction" comes out this Friday in the U.S. The critical consensus: despite some impressive 3D eye candy, this fourth installment in the franchise, weighing in at a whopping 165 minutes, lags under it's own weight and doesn't make much sense in the end.
