TV IS THE NEW CINEMA: 'True Detective' Partners McConaughey & Harrelson Pursue Another Serial Killer

“I get a bad taste in my mouth out here,” says Matthew McConaughey’s gaunt and haunted Rust Cohle, a detective as tightly wound as a cramped muscle who is hunting a ritualistic serial killer in rural Louisiana in the 1980s. “Aluminum, ash. Like you can smell the psychosphere.”

IS TV THE NEW CINEMA? From 'Scandal' to 'House of Cards,' Pundits Continue the Debate

TV IS THE NEW CINEMA: French Creep Show 'The Returned' Is Profoundly Unsettling

Perhaps only the gloomy, philosophical French could have a created a spook show as profoundly unsettling as "The Returned," in which the dead come back to life in a small city in the French Alps, not as ghosts or zombies but simply as themselves.

TV IS THE NEW CINEMA: 'Homeland' Takes Off, Leaving Clueless Critics in the Dust

Some of the people who are watching "Homeland" (Showtime) seem to have little experience watching or reading twisty thrillers, and very little appreciation of the genre's spicy pleasures. The twist revealed at the end of episode four of "Homeland" was a high point for the series, exactly the sort of coup genre fans relish. Commentators who had a problem with it have proved only that they should be watching, and writing about, something else. Maybe a nice sit com. "Trophy "Wife" is supposed to be good.
