Claudia Cardinale Guest of Honor for Venice Film Festival's Classic Film Lineup; Includes Rossellini, Renoir, Friedkin's 'Sorcerer' and More

Claudia Cardinale will be the guest host of Venezia Classici, the program devoted to classic film restorations, at the 70th Venice International Film Festival. This year's program includes Roberto Rossellini's "Paisan," Jean Renoir's "La bete humaine" and a Satyajit Ray program. (William Friedkin's "Sorcerer" was previously announced, and will open the series.)

Saudi Arabia's First Woman Director Haifaa Al Mansour Named Jury President of Debut Film Award at Venice Film Festival

Haifaa Al Mansour, Saudi Arabia's first woman filmmaker whose debut feature "Wadjda" has been a hit on the festival circuit since last fall, has been named President of the International Jury for the "Luigi De Laurentiis" Venice Award for a Debut Film at the 70th Venice International Film Festival, running from August 28 through September 7.

Simone Massi Designs Venice Biennale Poster, Inspired by Fellini and Angelopoulos (VIDEO)

Animator/illustrator Simone Massi's poster for the 70th Venice International Film Festival, which is held at the Lido from August 28 to September 7, is inspired by the cinema of Theo Angelopoulos and Federico Fellini. The festival is directed by Alberto Barbera and organized by the Biennale di Venezia, chaired by Paolo Baratta.

Alfonso Cuaron's 'Gravity' to Open the 70th Venice International Film Festival

As we predicted, Alfonso Cuaron's much anticipated sci-fi epic "Gravity," starring Sandra Bullock and George Clooney, will open the 70th Venice International Film Festival, running August 28 - September 7. The film will be out of competition.

What Could Play at the 2013 Venice Film Festival? 'Gravity,' 'Captain Phillips,' '12 Years a Slave' and Malick in the Mix

With the fall festival season only two months away, speculation has begun as to what will play at Venice, celebrating its 70th anniversary this year. Variety and HitFix think Alfonso Cuaron's space epic "Gravity," starring Sandra Bullock and George Clooney, and Paul Greengrass' "Captain Phillips," starring Tom Hanks as the real-life cargo ship captain who conducted tense negotiations with Somali pirates in 2009, will be part of the lineup.

Transplanted Brit writer-director Bernard Rose and Hollywood scion Danny Huston have enjoyed a long and fruitful relationship. Casting Huston in "IVANSXTC," a llittle-seen 2002 success d'estime that in many ways presaged the indie digital age, jumpstarted the would-be director's career as an actor. Huston keeps coming back for more, because with Rose he winds up doing his best acting.

Paul Schrader to Head Orizzonti Jury at 70th Venice Film Festival, 'The Canyons' Will Screen Out of Competition

Director and screenwriter Paul Schrader has been chosen as the president of the International Jury for the Orizzonti section of the upcoming Venice International Film Festival, celebrating its 70th year this August. Schrader's new film "The Canyons," starring Lindsay Lohan and porn star James Deen, will screen out of competition at the Italian fest.

Bernardo Bertolucci Named President of the International Jury of the Venezia 70 Competition

The jury president of the 70th Venice Film Festival international competition jury will be top Italian director Bernardo Bertolucci. The Venice Biennale, Europe's oldest film festival, will run from August 28 through September 7. 2013. The jury will award the Golden Lion and other official prizes; South Korean Oscar submission "Pieta" won the Golden Lion last year; the prize has also gone in recent years to Ang Lee's "Brokeback Mountain" and Sofia Coppola's "Somewhere."

Review: Malick Stumbles with 'To The Wonder'

There are no dinosaurs in Terrence Malick's sixth feature, but there are bison, sea turtles, prairies, toxic sludge, sun-dappled water, more prairies, a conflicted priest (Javier Bardem) and enough pirouetting by Olga Kurylenko to make you imagine that she probably felt dizzy at the end of each day's shooting.
