Arthouse Audit: 'Bad Words,' 'Enemy' and 'Le Week-End' Best of Modest Openers

As the post-Oscar surge abates, a wide range of new releases opened this week. They fell far short of the total of last week's massive opener "The Grand Budapest Hotel" (Fox Searchlight) which expanded this weekend to reach #8 in only 66 theaters. Also in the Top 10 is "Veronica Mars" (Warner Bros.) in 291 theaters, also available for simultaneous home viewing as is increasingly common among specialized releases.

Friday Box Office: Holdovers Battle 'Need for Speed' for Top Spot, 'Grand Budapest' & 'Veronica Mars' Reach Top 10

A three-way race for the weekend #1 started off with the DreamWorks video game adaptation "Need for Speed" (distributed by Buena Vista) on top with $6.64 million. But either #2, "300: Rise of an Empire" (Warner Bros.) with $5.8 million, or more likely "Mr. Peabody and Sherman" (20th Century-Fox), at $5.45 million could overtake "Speed" by the time final results are in on Monday.

This Weekend, Drive Past 'Need for Speed' and Head for the Indies

This weekend, your best bet is to steer clear of "Need for Speed" and seek out a few indies instead. The critics have spoken, and "Breaking Bad" star Aaron Paul's first mainstream theatrical vehicle, based on the wildly popular video game racing franchise, has no wheels. So instead, why not catch not one, but two hunky Jake Gyllenhaals in Denis Villeneuve's moody "Enemy," director Jason Bateman's "Bad Words," the long-awaited "Veronica Mars" movie, or even some sweet old folks in "Le Week-End"? Trailers below.

Pedorazzi: Kristen Bell and Star Parents Fight Back

The campaign against the “pedorazzi,” actress Kristen Bell’s perhaps-less-than-catchy term for photographers who chase star kids, is close to Bell’s heart, and there’s no time like the pre-release period of a hotly anticipated film – “Veronica Mars,” the upcoming Kickstarter-funded feature about the highs school detective (Bell) resurrected from the culty 2004-2007 TV series – to gather media steam for your cause. And just as Veronica was good at the well-timed revelation, Bell has been handing a few to journalists.
