Twitter Friday: Finke vs. Breznican, CHUD vs. Playlist, Power Couple at the Savoy

On Friday afternoons folks start to relax and hang on Twitter. This afternoon was particularly rich with delights. First, Deadline.com editrix Nikki Finke tweeted to refute USA Today staffer Anthony Breznican's assertion that a publicist pitched him to have Finke appear on his radio show, even though he doesn't have one. (I have heard Finke, who doesn't go out much, do radio interviews.)

What the Flick?! Online Video Talk Show Goes Live February 19

What the Flick?! Online Video Talk Show Goes Live February 19
I was as unhappy as anyone with the last iteration of At the Movies--the disastrous match-up of celeb-hugger Ben Lyons and Hollywood scion Ben Mankiewicz. But the latter, at least, had some potential as a professional cinephile, if not a serious film critic (I am blissfully happy with the current hosts, evenly-matched alpha males Michael Phillips and Tony Scott).

Daily Read: Shutter Island Reaction, Tarantino Goes West, Smith Fights Southwest
In case some of these stories got past you, Amy Dawes rounds up the day's industry news: While confessing to some fatigue at its length, Screen's Tim Grierson generally raves about the pulpy thrills of Martin Scorsese's Shutter Island, which premiered out of competition Saturday at the Berlin film festival and opens Feb. 19 stateside. But New York Magazine's David Edelstein calls it a long slog, and Emanuel Levy finds it similarly overwrought. In case you've somehow avoided it, here's the trailer.

Google Buzz Video

These days, keeping up with Twitter, email, Facebook, Linkedin (I abandoned myspace long ago) is almost more than a single person can sustain, much less reading something of any length or, God Forbid, thinking or doing any work.

Sundance Watch: Relativity/Rogue Grabs Catfish

While Paramount did screen Henry Joost and Ariel Schulman's Catfish for a recruited preview on Tuesday night, they did not seal a deal Wednesday. Instead, scooping up U.S., Canada and UK distribution rights to the movie was Relativity's Rogue label (the old Focus Features genre label that they bought from Universal), which plans to release the controversial social media doc through Universal. Director Brett Ratner enthusiastically brought the film to Relativity CEO Ryan Kavanaugh and plans to both exec produce and promote it.

Gaiman's Statuesque Stars Nighy

This lovely ten-minute silent Neil Gaiman short starring Bill Nighy is up on YouTube for the moment. This gifted fantasy writer's books have not always translated to film, although Coraline did, quite well. I'd like to see what he would do with his own stuff.
