Fans, Friends & Followers: Playbook for the Social Media Age

Cinematech blogger Scott Kirsner drank the digital Kool-aid some time back. So the author of 2007's The Future of Web Video and 2008's Inventing the Movies decided that he had to self-publish his newest book, Fans, Friends and Followers. "If I was writing that artists had to be their own entrepreneur," he says, "then I had to do it too."

Twitter Makes Time Cover

While I graze my Tweetdeck several times a day to see what the 184 people I am following on Twitter have posted (I know, I'm cutting the list down), the people following me tend to just get my automatic blogfeed, which also goes to Facebook (only if I'm logged in; if not, I have to check and add it manually). But I am picking up links and tips and stories constantly, faster than checking my various other aggregators. When something "breaks" on Twitter, I have a shot at getting my own reaction to it out faster than otherwise.

SnagFilms Docs on YouTube

">YouTube has gone live with long-form feature content. One of the charter partners on the new deal is SnagFilms, which now has a YouTube channel featuring full-length feature documentary films selected from SnagFilms' online library. Their long-form feature collaboration launches April 17.

Twitter Must-Follows

The LAT picks its top 25 must-follows on Twitter and runs it as a celeb photo gallery. Kids in my USC class admit they get a kick out of getting tweets from celebs. It's the most direct, uncluttered version of fan communication there is. Stars and fans 1.0: responding to fan mail. 2.0: Twitter. Safe, no intermediary. Fans follow you but you don't have to deal with them. It's a one-way street.

Netflix and Facebook Are Friends

Thus it's no surprise that Netflix and Facebook have joined forces.
